Weird Noise-Synchro's?

About a week ago I started noticing a whistling/fast rattling noise coming from my 01 ss when in gear. The noise is only apparent when I am in motion and do not have the clutch in. The sound is getting really annoying :bang:

A buddy of mine said it's most likely the synchronizers going bad. Does this sound about right?

If so, whats involved in replacing the snychro's? I am pretty sure that I would have to drop the tranny, should I look into a complete rebuild?

Yeah unfortunately that may be the cause but can you describe the sound a bit more? I know it is hard to do over the net. Maybe have a friend take video when you drive?

unfortunately, i dont have the resources to get a cound clip uploaded. it almost sounds like a rattle snake rattling. its more of a rattle than a whistle. doesnt necessarily sound like anythings grinding-more like something is loose. i dont have any trouble getting the car in gear or shifting as it seems most people do when their synchro's go out

the sound has been going on and off and is now sometimes apparent when the car is idling.

i cant tell where exactly the sound is coming from...could it be anything else besides the synchros?

When you are sitting in neutral with the clutch engaged, does the rattling go away, get quieter, or louder?

it just started to make the noise while stopped with the clutch engaged. The noise is definitely quieter then though...
