What could this clunking be?
I just removed my EGR and Air pump systems yesterday I drove the car to work and it was fine (I work midnites) and so when I got in it this morning everything was just fine and then a few miles down the road I start to here a slight rattle and then WHAM the car starts shaking and vibrating and making this EXTREMELY loud continous clunking noise when I press and hold the gas. I finally got it home and its on jack stands right now I put it in gear and got underneath the car it kind of sounds like its comming from the driveshaft though, but im not sure. I have fluid in the rear(although its very nasty and has a burnt smell to it I think ill change it 2day) and the torque arm bushing looks very old. What do you guys think any suggestions on what could be wrong? I could REALLy use the help right now. thanks

well I replaced the tq arm but one bolt wont go in ill do that 2morrow (have to go to work) BUT the driveshaft has ALOT of play in it. Could that be the u-joints or something else. I have quite alot of fluid leakage from the from seal on the rear and a decent amount of leagage by the rear seal of the tranny. What do you guys think? Could it be rear-end problems?

They only time I'll get a somewhat nasty sounding clunk is when I'm slowing down and then hit the gas,,, and the trans downshifts from 3rd to 2nd. It kinda sounds like there is play somewhere.

all of our cars have some sort of plat in the drive line. thats why the dealer ship has specs as to how far out of line it can go before it needs to be replaced. if the noise is really bad have it checked out and try not to duplicate it as much as possible. my trans am makes a slight clunk when slowing down in a lower gear and i hit the gas. the reason is because when you slowing down the drag is pulling one way on the drive shaft. when i step on the pedal that slight give that is suposed to be there goes away and the drag is on the otherside until you let off the gas again. hope i didn't confuse to many people.
