Mother Nature dropped the hammer on yet another attempt to complete an event in the SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway but not before some astonishing performances were recorded in the brief thirty-four minutes of racing which were squeezed in before the third rainout of the 2007 season.

Although it was raining nearly everywhere but the track, the GIR crew completed timed trials and managed to get nine pairs of cars down the track before spectacular lightning first caused the cessation of activities followed by torrential rain which washed out the event. Regardless, several monumental runs were clocked, including a phenomenal effort by Chris Gosch at the helm of Bill Stewart’s 2007 Shelby GT500 Mustang. After a career-best 11.20-second pass at over 127 miles per hour last week during late timed trials, the Ted’s Motorcycle World-sponsored white Mustang unleashed an 11.31 at an astounding 133.41 mph! Gosch was later one of the few to gain an official qualifying pass and hit an 11.52/126.19.

Tim Mallicoat, who scored his first SCSS title of the season last week, romped to a 9.59/135.54 effort in his naturally-aspirated 468-cubic inch ‘68 Camaro while Bobby Tarr’s Aviston, Illinois-based 381-inch ‘91 Mustang had clocked a 10.36/134.34 during timed trials for his best SCSS numbers yet. Brandon Carter’s High Ridge, Missouri ten-second 306-inch ‘89 Mustang ran an off-pace 12.17/122.62 during timed trials and was on the starting line when lightning forced the initial delay. Waiting in the wings when the rains hit were the nine-second rides of Tony Buhl and Tony Huff and the 8.8-second ‘65 Mercury Comet of Steven Gentry.

In St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown Series action, Rick Howie zipped through two timed trials and one qualifying pass to lead the field. Howie, who won his first STSS trophy last week at the helm of his turbocharged 1.8 litre Honda Civic, opened with a best-ever 12.11/116.85, improved to a 12.06/117.79 and, during qualifying, became the SCSS’s first eleven-second street-driven Honda with a tremendous 11.98-second, 119.23 mph blast. Mike Bobelak’s Polk Audio-sponsored ‘96 Vokswagen Golf ran as quick as 13.01/119.08, followed by Alex Shapovalov’s ’99 Civic which qualified at 14.34/105.34 but hit a career-best 14.05/107.17 in timed trials.

Although Hal Marshall was in line to run when the weather stopped the meet, Larry King’s ‘99 Ford Lightning clocked a career-best 13.15 at104.96 in timed trials for the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown while two-time finalist Don Hilderbrand’s 455 Olds-powered ‘67 C10 pickup, (the driving duties of which were being shared with his 21-year old daughter Dawn), hit a best-ever 13.65/99.92 on its only timed run. Tony Cimino’s ‘04 Lightning was officially leading qualifying for the Super Trucks at 14.38/98.74 when the weather hit.

Under Gateway International Raceway policies, the event was cancelled within two hours of the first run of the event and, therefore, all competitors and spectators were issued rain checks and no qualifying points were awarded.
