Default I am an Idiot!

ALright guys im having a small problem. I need to change the hydraulic fluid in my SS, and I have been hearing different ideas on how to do it. I heard from Larry and Speed Inc that all i would have to do is take a turkey baster and suck the fluid out of the reservoir and then fill it and drive it around, and keep doing this till the fluid is completely clean. What do you guys think? Should i try this? I just dont wanna end up getting air in the system and totally screwing myself then. So any advice would be VERY VERY helpful. Thanks Guys!

Suck the old fluid out of the reservoir, fill with new fluid. Then just bleed the system like you normally would. When the fluid in the reservoir gets low from bleeding add more fluid and keep bleeding untill clean fluid is coming out from the bleeder. The system doesn;t hold much fluid and shouldn't take much bleeding.

that way works fine, prevents air in the system and prevents putting pressure on the seals like a vac does.

I was having the problem with the clutch pedal sticking on the floor. My fluid was straight black and no amount of bleeding helped it for anymore than at most one full track pass. I ended up going with a new cylinder, made it adjustable, and did the drill mod and problem solved. The turkey baster does work but sometimes its just to far gone as in my case.

so if i try it out and do the turkey baster idea..Do i just suck the fluid out of the reservoir then pour in the new fluid..Get in the car and either drive it around, or pump the pedal alot, and then open the reservoir, suck the fluid out, and keep doing it till the fluid is completely clean? Doing it this way will prevent air getting into the lines correct?

No, you need to bleed it properly. You need to suck what is in the reservoir out, fill with new fluid, put the cap back on. Have someone pump the pedal and then hold it to the floor, then you will open the slave bleeder and let the old fluid come out, then close the bleeder and repeat untill you only see clean fluid come out. Just make sure you keep filling the reservoir after you open the bleeder or you will get air in the system.

Ah, I'm just razzing you man. Just be certain to not get any air in the system or you'll be really pissed. Have you ever bleed brakes before? It works the exact same way. You are just building pressure in the system by pumping the clutch and then releasing it when you open the bleeder causing the old fluid to come out.

I guess technically you could do it the way you said by removing the reservoir fluid ever so often. I guess eventually you'd get it all out but I don't think you'll get the immediate results you are after. If you weren't so far I'd do it for you.

The slave bleeder screw is a 7/16 or an 11mm, I think either one will work. It's a tight squeeze but you can get a 1/4 drive ratchet in there.

I drilled a hole in my floorboard, right above the bleeder. Now it only takes one person to bleed the system. Also I jack the car up high on the left so the air naturally flows closer to the bleeder.

Here's what I did on my Viper:

Empty reservior with turkey baster or whatever, but not 100% empty. Fill with new fluid. Pump clutch 30 times. Repeat first step until fluid is clean.

Worked for me, but probably not as good as a full bleed.

I have the perfect electric bleeder for this. I used to do it all the time because it was so easy. I have a brake bleeder we use at work that fits on all Mercedes-benz master cylinder reservoirs. It also fits perfectly on the ls1 clutch reservoir, i used to hook it up turn it on and open the bleeder. It would come out pretty fast and id have totally clean fluid in about 3 mins.

Stop being worried. We don't drive these cars to be easy one them. If you break something, replace it with something better!
