Default Guy says he was in Marine Force Recons...

A guy I met recently says he was in the Marine Special Forces for 7 years. He also said he was a bunch of other crazy stuff ( Bounty Hunter , Runway Model Scout, works for Triple Canopy ).

Is there something I could ask him that anyone in Force Recons would know, to kinda catch him if he is telling lies? It would be funny as hell if he is just making up story's.

DD-214...

this reminds me of the book I just finished reading called the The Phony Marine about a guy who bought a silver star on ebay and "transformed" into a Marine....good read.

the author is a real Marine. Jim Lehrer

If he has a DD Form 214, couldn't he just be lying about what he actually did in the service?

I had a guy in my old unit (Army) who I know for a fact was in the Marines before and he told me he was Force Recon but I never really believed him. He couldn't shoot expert, he sucked at land nav but his PT was pretty darn good. Just thought I would share.

Sounds like a classic BSer. If you were in the mil,or were a vet..even a REMF,you could probably see through it very quickly.

Zero,

If he actually got to Force then he should have the MOS 0321, just ask him if he had the recon MOS of 0331 (machine gunner). The MOS 0f 0321 should be reflected on his 214 along with jump (at least basic and poss. of HALO at Yuma), and one of the dive schools. Should have other “cool” schools listed.

Special Forces are U.S. Army, sometimes called Green Berets. Occasionally Marines work with, for, or have working for them SF. These would not be reflected on a 214.

That does not mean the Marine is SF unless he has passed the Q, served on an A-team and been a soldier prior to becoming a Marine. Getting drunk at unit/team party afterwards and being inducted into the SF hall of fame with placement of Green Beanie on his grape does not count.

If he is talking about the relatively new MarSoC that should be easy to check out as it just recently stood up.

If he talks about Det 1 ask him to name his Air Officer and his background (the AirO use to fly Fat Albert and was prior enlisted 0321).

Overall take is that he is probably BSing.

^^^he raises a good point, when I was talking to a couple of marines one time they all had the general consensus that you had to be of the infantry mos in order to hit recon

A true Marine is a true Marine. Does not need to prove himself, or anything. You know who you really are.

Not necessarily, RI (Recon Indoc) was/is open to anyone who meets the criteria irrespective of MOS.

If the Marine passes Indoc and Recon wants him then he can transfer over. The caveat is that is monitor has to give his thumbs up for the lateral move and is not allowed to do so if the MOS is considered short.

exactly...a ranger team is made up of many different MOSs i.e. medic ,engineer etc. not that its anywhere near the same as MFR, but i would figure it would be similar.
