He did most ALL of the work on this thing. And got 3rd place to boot. That's 3rd out of 40+ cars.
The only thing I did was take a portable power drill and got a polishing bit and polished the nails that are used as axles etc. Polished the insides of the wheels too. It was perfectly legal. I am really proud of him for being such a good sport too. The guy that beat him, that took him out of the competition had a parent that was being a jerk. The race was close. VERY close. When the race was over the winner's dad said "YEAH.. WAY TO KICK HIS BUTT!!1" Of course my mother had to say "It was far too close to have been called a butt kick" The kids however were acting more mature than the adults. James, my son, went up to the kid and gave him a high five and congratulated him on winning. Made me extremely proud.
He did get a nifty trophy and ribbon. His first he has ever got.

I remember doing the pinewood derbys. I still have all my cars in fact. LOL
Looks pretty sweet, I don't remember them having such a long wheel base though?
I recall some parents acting like dumb ***** too at the event(s).

I thought so as well. I've always taught him that it was just all fun and games. The fun part was playing, not winning. Having said that, 3rd out of that many cars isn't bad.
Yup.. the dreaded "Mall" races.
Using graphite, legal. Shaving the wheels to reduce rotational mass = illegal. We had a set of parents this year that kept trying to get pass inspection with shaved wheels. After about the 4th run through inspections, the mother said "Fine! We just wont run in THIS race!" as if it was hurting the group. I was embarrassed for the kid. He didn't even do shiz to his car. His dad obviously made it. There are some parents out there teaching their kids bad habits. That's for sure.

I was giving a lady I work with some tips on how to make a fast pinewood car with her son. She told me that graphite was illegal these days.
I guess they felt like it wasn't fair for the kids who weren't using graphite. The graphite cars are ALOT quicker.

Hmmm. I figured the rules were the same for all of boyscouts, but maybe they differ by districts.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely agree with you. But, you know how people are these days. Some people don't put in the extra effort and go to the hobby stores to buy the graphite. Others don't put in the time to shave the wheels. Then they come back whining because they didn't win, so the rules have to changed.
The only thing that should be regulated is the weight, and dimensions. Any rules beyond that are stupid in my opinion.
