Default 10 Bolt rebuild or 12 Bolt replace??

My 10 bolt with 4.10's just recently took a turn for the worse. It's rumbling loudly, so it's definitely on it's last leg. I've got the replacement gears, but I'm trying to determine if it's worth the investment on the 10 bolt with a high probability of this happening again. The gears are over $200 and the setup will be about $650. A 12 bolt replacement would be about $1500 - $2000, so I'm wondering if I ought to just bite the bullet and go for the 12?
If I go ahead and do the rebuild on the 10 and decide to replace with the 12 bolt later on, do you think there would be any chance of selling that rebuilt 10 bolt to recoop part of my investment?
Thanks for any advice/experience!

I can't say enough how much you should just go ahead and do the swap. If it broke once, it's probably going to break again, and if you break something, you might as well replace it with something stronger.

From personal experience, you might want to look into a 9" though

Default 12 bolt

Alright, I'll probably look at that pretty seriously. Since I've already got the gears, I hate for them to go to waste. I may just try and get it fixed, then sell it. Is there any kind of market for used 10 bolts w/4.10's?

Actually they are pretty easy to sell because so many of us break'em. But because we know it is only a band-aid they don't bring much. I would sell the gear because the entire rear only sells for slightly more than the gear price.......

buy about $200 bucks in tools and rebuild the 10 bolt yourself and save all the labor. Much cheaper. If you are a manual car forget that advice.

What he said, but save money for a 12 or 9 in...they are so much better.

if you have a manual get a 9 inch

if you are a auto get a 12 bolt

Wish someone told me that when I was buying mine. But I am now going auto so it all works out.

The GM 12 bolt uses an 8.87 inch ring gear just for reference.Moser sells custom 9 inch rear ends for the f-body for about $2500(lol).

Default M6

Yeah, it's an M6, so I suppose the general consensus is the 9in. Might as well get the full axle, housing, brakes, suspension, etc right?
When I finish the motor build, it otta be puttin down about 410RWHP so I'm thinking the 10 bolt won't last long after that LOL

A 12 bolt is expensive but its worth the money. A 9" is gonna be the best bet but it all depends on your money situation. Personally I will put a 12 bolt in my car eventually.

I thought it doesn't even matter...whats the major difference between the two that would force you to use the manual with a 9 in. and the auto with a 12 bolt? And would you be able to use an auto with a 9 in and vice versa

Torque arm with the manual tends to bend the 12 bolt enclosure, causing gear noise. I don't know why that doesn't happen with the auto, but that's why you don't want the 12 bolt.

Why dont you have the ends changed on the driveshafts at axle place? I had one made for my 67, it had a glide when it was new and I went with a Tubro 400. Just find have one made to fit. Thats what I would do. I can ask my buddy, he is running a 12 bolt with a Turbo 350 in his car.
