Not that I roll race but i just hate it when im at the bottom of third and I punch it the stock converter stalls at 4k, will a higher stall and a low STR help my situation without getting higher gear ratio's??

What do you mean the stock converter stalls a 4K, the stock stall speed is right around 1500-1800? Yes a higher stall will help your situation out. This thread belongs in the transmission section and if you check that catergory out there is a sticky all about converters read it and you will learn alot.

And for future reference your vehicle and mods go in your signature so you don't have to type it everytime you post

Hmmm I can't help you if you say your stock stall stalls at 4000....

I think you need to understand a stall better.

I guess you could get a 3600-4000 stall and it will probably help quite a bit.

apparently I do, what i mean is when im cruzing at like 80 in third gear its at 3500rpm's, then when i floor it at that speed the converter will lock up a 4k, which dosen't get me in my powerband, will a high stall help out or do a4's just suck in third gear from a roll with my 3.23's

yes. a higher stall (like a 3600) would probably have you at about 5000+ rpm in this scenario. if you're doing a search about this, you're looking for info about "shift extension" which basically is where your rpm drops to after each shift (approx 4800rpm for a 3600 stall, but it depends on other variables).

if you can deal with the heat they put out and the looseness of them, you're just going to be kicking yourself for not going with one sooner.

Yeah Iv'e read alot about TC's on this site and read the sticky I just wanted to clarify the answer to myself before i go out and grab one and the post that you do read about TC's are usually how they perform at a dead stop then per say a highway roll, I guess I'm more intrested in the shift extension
...... should of posted this in the Automatic Trans. section for more insight but I felt it was a noob question cause Iv'e never had a stalled auto

If you want a good converter from a roll look into yanks PT series. They have high stalls with fairly low STR's Making them more efficient on the top end and are known as one of the best N/A converters...
My PT3800 for example has a STR of 2.0... When shifting at 6100rpm's the shift extension only drops me to about 5100rpm's... and in manual 2nd from say a 30 roll will flash straight to 4800+ rpm's, and will light up street tires from a 2nd gear 50mph roll, If your dumb enough to try running street tires with a big stall that is lol...

I picked up 3mph in the 1/4 with a PT4000 over the stock stall. I would say that any stall will help you get going better (stop or roll) but most stalls will cost you some MPH on the big end. Which would hurt in a roll racing scenario.

Then again if I'm going less than 25-30 MPH, I don't have any traction on the street. Even with drag radials and thats on a bolt on car w/ 3.23s.

6 speed swap.........

on a more serious note... you want to look more in the STR than what it actually flashes to..

my VIG 4k NEVER saw under 5k rpms at any given time when WOT..

Why you cruising in 3rd at 80mph with 3500rpm's in the 1st place??? Youd be better off leaving it in 4th/OD and then flooring it so it will rev up and down shift at least.

he has a one of those rare autouals... you have to actually shift the automatic, manual!

Ideal stall is typically where the max torque multiplication could occur. In the case of a bone stock LS1,it would be around 4000rpms.However,the stall on the stock converter is close to 2000RPM's.A lot of people seem to like the Yank torque converters.

That is what I do. There is no since in shifting a auto tranny its just gonna tear it up. I leave mine in D until I get to 60 then I shift it into OD and leave it there.
