Default Picked up a 1998 SS Camaro... few questions

Picked this car up off craigslist. Very nice car, needs some work but its coming around.

First Q - Rear gears, is the standard rear gear ratio for a wu8 SS camaro 3:23? This car is a auto, would there be an rpo code for optional gears?

Second Q - The car has the WU8 rpo code on the door option list, has single slp exhaust, but the hood is not cut for "ram air"

Was there an additional option to add for the hood to function?
A turbo should fix this issue.

cut and paste from some site: shows unique hood air intake???

SS Performance Package includes
320-hp forced air induction system,
unique hood air intake, synthetic
engine oil, P275/40ZR17 performance
tires, 17" x 9" 5-spoke cast-aluminum
wheels, specially-tuned performance
suspension with larger front stabilizer
bar, stiffer springs, unique shock
valving and stiffer bushings, specific
exterior and interior "SS" badging and
unique rear decklid spoiler

Third Q - Dex 3 for trans fluid?

Thanks

Congrats on the SS!

3.23 is the option (and standard for SS). Standard gear for A4's are 2.73's.

WU8 just means SS. SLP door sticker or call SLP to see what options they put on to find the real truth.

SS package is the SS hood, nothing more then that. Underside of the hood you can see the channels from the scoop round back to where the lid is.

Dexron ATF.
Miss conceptions about the 4L60E 4L80E

Thank you for the quick reply, i dont know alot about the slp / add ons.

I assumed it was a standard upgrade with standard cookie cutter options.

Now i find out slp offered options....

Back in 98/99 i tried to order a orange SS with the 1LE... Basically i wanted a SS with no options... Crank windows ect...

This one is stock, nothing changed and appears never to be wrecked.

Do you have slp's # ?

Thanks

I'm really digging into the archive here, but as I recall the RPO code for the optional 3.23 gear is GU5. I haven't had an A4 LS1 for about 7 years now so I could be wrong on that one.

Craig - good post brother...nice job helping guys out.

Crager-
I will have to give them a call.
Are those the original window stickers, or is there a way to print them online?

I only have the first page of the three you have, wonder if i can find the other two.....

Turns out my car is from bradenton florida.
The first pages comes to a whopping $28185.00

Now that i see your page 2

My car has the ss grille
the original bilstein shocks.. they are red, wonder if slp is open today.. to find out what it came with.

Unit213-
Thanks for the tip, you confirmed it as well as Crager, the car does have the GU5 & G80 RPO codes I didnt even have to get dirty

Well, i just washed it up... Spent about an hour and 10.00 at the car wash getting all the dirt and blems out of the paint.

Here it is, apparently it does not have the ss front grille. Anyone know where to get one?

Yes those are my original window stickers.

I have a 2nd GM page because of soo many GM options...12-disc changer, Hurst shifter, etc... Not all SS's will have soo many window stickers.

Yes from the pics your car does not have SS grille, but you can buy a grille from SLP. Bilstein shocks are not red, they are yellow and blue.

Mine appears to have a factory style header, stainless steel.... Not the "truck manifold style header that rusts up"

So... everyone is telling me to put headers on it, these cant flow that bad right?

What 8 horsepower with new ones?

look like the slp ss grill that has been painted to match the car, and they cut out part of it so that air would go into the intercooler.

Go to the 98-02 SS restoration section on SLP's site. The SS SLP grill is in there.

Check your inner door jambs for an SLP content sticker. It will list all of your SLP options. You don't have the suspension but you have the 98 version of the "TODL" exhaust. Is Y2Y on your RPO code list? If so that means it went to SLP for additional content.

LS1s respond twice as good to less exhaust back pressure as a regular small block. Headers do wake them up but then you have to weigh that against the compromises you face with long tube headers.

No stock stainless steel headers. It's either aftermarket or not, very easy to tell the two apart.

Grilles:

They are the same, just different badges.

The stock SS grille is same as all Camaro's:

...painted in Camaro letters

Stock again:

My stock (SLP optioned) SS grille:

...IMHO the best grille for these cars.

Thanks for the tip, i am here to learn, there is so much stuff i need to catch up on.
I have attached the photo of the rpo code, no y2y code... I do not see the SLP content sticker... but the car is a WU8 SS.

I dont know much about these cars, ive been into grand nationals for 13 years or so... they tend to take up alot of my time... owned about 25 and 3 89 20th anniversary tta's currently have too many...

If i did headers, what is the disadvantage? Make alot of noise and leaks?
Being totally honest here, i bought the car with a rod knock. Im doing a motor for it, i am weighing my options between a LQ9 LS6 or a standard LS1, if i did a 5.3, then its getting a turbo and convertor. Car is 100% stock from what i see.

I do have a few turbo's laying around, and this 76 turbo would fit just fine.

Im stuck in a rut, not sure what to do.... IF I COULD POST IN THE WANTED SECTION, I COULD GET A AD UP ASKING FOR PARTS I NEED

Headers..

These appear to be factory headers. These are stainless from looking at them right??? Im just here to learn, i dont know alot about these cars, i appears these would work just fine, flow fairly decent?
Here is the photo of the header

From looking the car over, its mostly stock, doesnt appear to have been modded out. 2 owner car.

Your car is very nice, thats the grill i was looking for I agree, it does look like the nicest grill on these cars
