Default Driveshaft question

All of a sudden I had a new 'click' 'click' 'click' going down the road and I think it is the driveshaft. I dont want to say my driveshaft is "loose" but there is a little bit of play as in I can rotate it with my hand slightly (maybe 1/4in). The driveline is one of the few things I just dont know a whole lot about so any suggestions would be appreciated. Sounds like its coming from directly below me and only makes the sound when in motion and increases and decreases with speed, not rpms. Thanks guys.

if it has a little bit of play that is ok, i know mine is a problem, mine has excessive play because the dealer changed my axels and messed up the gear mesh. the click click you speak of could be the U joints, there is 2 of them, one on each end of the driveshaft

naw they arent, they are held in by cups, common sense will lead you to fix it man. it should be simple,, i think some oil might pour out the trans when you remove the driveshaft so watch out

The u joints aren't hard if you have done u joints before. You can screw them up pretty easy. Plus the plastic melting can be a pain in the ***.

crawl under and look.

some of the play could be in your rear end.

^^ well the plan to put them in had gotten put on the back burner from a busted motor She's running now so I guess I dont have any more excuses. You can get them off ebay for about $20 a piece. Spicer U joints are made by Dana, they are big in the 4X4 world. People love them.

I did my U-joints back on my V6 back in the day. I just got the autozone special, Duralast gold I think they were, and are the heavy duty ones. They are pre greased so you dont have to fight trying to get a lube gun in between joints.

If the u-joins are still stock, you will have to melt the plastic retainer that holds the joints in. If you have a steel DS, you should be ok, if its alum, be careful not to overheat it and warp where the joints go in, just enough to break the u-joint out. When you take the caps off the new u-joints to put them back in, make sure you check to see that none of the rollers have moved or fell out of the cap. They can fall off the wall of the cap in the center and cause problems, and you wont get it to fit right. I broke a cap once, because I didnt know a roller fell out of place and it cracked the cap when I was "forcing" it back onto place. Good luck with the u-joint replace, its easy but can be a prob if you miss the little things.
