Super noob Q, I know this.

Anyone? I know there are pros and cons to heavy/light oils, I just have no idea what they are. My climate is fairly mild, generally low 40s in the winter, 100 avg in the summer.

10w30 if it doesn't get very cold where you live (below 0 degree F), or 5w30 if it does.

In my cammed LS1 i use 5w30 fully syn Pennzoil Platinum in the summer. I dont drive the car during winter.

0-30 German castrol. 0w at start up and nearly 40w at temp .Great UOA #'s on bobistheoilguy. Pennz Plat is my 2nd choice. A 5qt jug from Wally is like $22 + A $6 qt. GC runs me $7 qt. or $42 total but I think it is worth it.

factory specs say 5w30...... also says do NOT use 40 weight....just what the book says....lol so on that alone 5w30 is what I would do. Im using 10w30 right now and it got a lot colder then I expected. Im not seeing a lot of negatives with the 10w30 right now but the oil pressure does stay high for a little longer then it use to in the warm weather...

i have ran mobil1 5w30 syn since the car has been new,the last 2 summers i have ran the 5w40 mobil1 syn,since alot of the guys on here say the 5w30 thins out to quick and have had no problems with it,but i only drive mine in the summer.

This right here. The first number is for a cold start so 5w-30 and 10w-30 are both the same weight at operating temperatures. Now German Castoral is 0w-30 will stay thicker at operating temperatures then other 5w-30's making it a better oil. For me GC keeps oil pressure up and quiets the motor down considerably. So go with Castoral Syntec that says European Formula on the front and Made in Germany on the back.

I've been using nothing but M1 0W40 for many years now, in all my LS1s. Never a problem. M1 oils run on the thin side of their weight rating, so their 40w is very similar to a thicker 30w.

A better question would be what oil CAN'T you use. There would be many fewer oils either in weight or manufacture.
