Default whining sound after 60 mph

Just got my first ls1 and realized once i hit around 60+ mph and i put my foot on the gas i hear a whining sound in the car. The second i get off the gas it goes away and as soon as i get back on the gas i hear it again.

sounds like it is coming right from under my seat / console area. Havent checked to see if it doesnt only on certain gears or not yet. just noticed it cruising down interstate when in 5th or 6th

do you know if the car still has its original gearset?

either someone beat the snot out of the car before you got it and is causing it to whine, or tried replacing the gears and failed to install them properly.

...a friend of mine gave me a set of used GM 3.42s for free for my 87. i had them installed. they whined. had them reinstalled. they whined worse. i wanted to end my life they whined so bad. could hear them over my full exhaust, with the windows down and the radio on. a half hour drive and i was tempted to swerve into oncoming traffic.

finally, i had those gears replaced with brand new motives by a competent mechanic. problem fixed. life spared. way too much money spent.

i have that same problem. if you have an aftermarket shifter its just the sound of the gears in your tranny. the sound doesn't travel through the stock shifter as well as a full metal aftermarket one thats why you hear it.

Yeah, sounds like rear end gears to me. I had the same problem. Under light throttle at cruising speeds I would get the whine, let off the gas and it would go away.

Sounds like classic rear end whine, if the rear is original and untouched, I would suspect the pinion bearings. Although M6s tend to destroy carrier bearing races as well. It could also be the M6, but that is less likely IMO.

when i had the 10 bolt under the 87 pulled apart the 2nd or 3rd time we found some pitted pinion races, but after replacing barely made a difference in the noise.

new gears, installed correctly fixed my problem.

It is all stock to my knowledge and last owner said she never did anything to it. Someone said something about a bearing also that was actually in the car with. My big thing was if its something i needed to tend to immed. I guess. I can live with the sound just turn up the tunes a lil and im all good

It won't blow up, but you will.

Since you have an m6 I would bet the crush sleeve has seen too much abuse and has loosened up.

...I have heard of ppl tightening the pinion nut, but thats only a temp fix.

+1 on the crush sleeve and when they whine the noise travels up driveshaft and its hard to find
