I messed up my car!
I just got back a 1/2 hour ago from a car meet and I ended up racing a friend. Some how I missed 4th gear and over revved. Now I have a noticeable ticking noise. I popped my hood to see if I could find out where the ticking was coming from, but I could only hear it from under the car. Maybe something in the tranny? I don't think I bent my pushrods because I bent 6 of them before and the tick was a little louder from what I remember. What do you guys think?

Leakdown test will tell you if the valves are bent/not sealing. Compression test would show poor results as well, but won't narrow down the exact cause. Vacuum readings would also be effected (lower, more erratic).
What is your rev limiter set to (stock, or have you raised it)? And, did you just tag the limiter between gears or mechanically overrev by downshifting rather than upshifting?

I did the 3rd to 2nd (on accident) down shift at about 90 mph (m6 3.42s).Worst sound ever.(loud bang) came out the rear end .Scared me and the bmw I was racing!didn't break anything ! I'm probably wrong but when I broke a rocker arm it was a loud ticking sound you can hear from under the car ,sounds similar 2 an exhaust leak but you can also here when you pop the hood.good luck.

I feel your pain, I did the same thing. The person I was racing said he saw black smoke pour out of my exhaust when I went from third to second. Luckily I noticed it as soon as I did it and engaged the clutch. Man did it scare me though.

I am not a wrench ... so my methods are non-invasive. My father used to use a large / long screw driver ... press it against the area you believe the ticking is coming from. You may (or may not) feel the ticking transfer to the screwdriver. He would also put his ear on the screwdriver as well (hence, LONG screwdriver). I used the latter technique on my 1952 Chevy, when I was trying to determine if I had bent pushrods.

Take a thick piece of wood I use a shorten shovel handle put it to the oil pan and place ur ear to it and listen to the knock. And do the same on ur intake which is louder that's were the problem is . If it's at the oil pan u better start saving for a new build just go forged and as big as u can !
Good luck tho
