02 Camaro stock 6spd shifter issues
Newbie here. I just picked up an 02 Camaro z28 6spd on Sunday and I noticed the shift **** was always turning and realized the entire shaft turns with it and never tightens. I also turn it to loosen it but it keeps turning and never comes out...I am sure its not suppose to do that. Any ideas what it might be?
Thanks

something like this happened to me...i had a lot of rattling coming from in my shifter and i just pulled the leather boot up, it's clipped down, and then there are 2 bolts holding the shifter shaft down. maybe something to check first, it's a lot easier than taking off the whole console

Ok, I think I found the problem. I took the shift boot off and the shifter came out with it. I notice there is no ball on the bottom. I am pretty sure there is suppose to be one right?

Just out of curiosity was the car you bought always a 6 speed or did they do a swap? I am having the same problem with my car and just recently found out that my car was originally auto after looking more into it. The guy didn't tell me til I started having problems with the slave cylinder. But anyway good luck with your car!

LOL. Sorry for scaring you but anyway there is no reason to be scared as long as everything works! At first I was freaking out too, I was thinking, "damn, what if they swapped out my ls1 too!!" LOL. But then when I got the smog check done the guy complemented on how well the engine and tranny had been maintained. You should just fix the shifter **** and enjoy your car.

Look in your RPO codes on the inside door jamb (the little sticker with all the 3 digit alphanumeric codes). If one says GU2 or GU5, your car was originally an auto. This are the codes for which gears it came with from the factory (GU2=2.73/ GU5= 3.23). No manual transmission car could come with that RPO code, since EVERY manual got 3.42 gears (RPO "GU6" I believe). That's the easiest way in my mind, unless there's a code for the tranny.....but my way is will tell you for sure.

Ok. The car has always been a M6. The guy sent me the carfax from when he bought the car.
As far as the shifter, I figured out its just broken. It looks like the shifter shaft is suppose to be attatched to the larger black piece that is held on by the 2 small bolts. The rubber around the shifter shaft itself is shredded causing the constant turning and I was actually able to pull straight up on the shift **** and the shaft came out. Shimmed it as a temp fix, not gonna worry about it...I got my eye on some aftermarket shifter setups...
Thanks for the help everyone.

Thanks. The only bad reviews I have heard are noise complaints or dont know what gear they are in. On every manual sports car I have owned, any time I put an aftermarket short shifter setup it will be noisy in the cabin. Some people dont get that when they buy these upgraded shifters that the sound dampening is eliminated most of the time or replaced with a stiffer polyurethane or in some cases machined stainless bushings... getting use to the shifting just comes with time
