Default Towing

I know most of you guys would never do this, but I really want a camaro. The only problem is I have to have something to tow my boat. I was just wondering if anyone does this, or has done this.

I have seen a few f-bods with towhitches .... I always go "What the fuuuccckkkkk ..."

I'm sure they probably cannot tow a boat very well

unless the "boat" is really a jet ski, otherwise just buy an old late 80's early 90's pickup. They're pretty cheap.

If you want to trailer a boat, I'd suggest a vehicle with a frame (like Kurt D's suggestion of a pickup) instead of a unit body (like the f-body).

You dont want to end up ripping off the back half of your car.
This also depends on the size of the boat. If its a small boat, then its probably ok (well they do sell tow packages for unit body cars). If its a big boat, I'd side with safety and use a full framed vehicle.

Lot's of AXers tow small trailers with tires and tools. The car actually tows the trailers very well.

I had a Hidden Hitch brand on my TA for a long while without an issue. But you can ony get a Class 1 hitch, which is good for about 150lbs of tongue weight and a 1000lbs gross weight.

It better be a small boat ...

who has that pic of the vette that tried to tow a boat... the yellow vette that was later seen floating(sinking) in the water after he tried to launch his boat.....i wouldnt recomend it. because in this case the f-body would have probably had the same outcome... swimming with the fishies.

here ya go

"It was an amazing thing to witness in person. Angie was watching from the beginning.
She said he was having a little trouble backing the trailer down the ramp to the awaiting jetski at first. He backed the trailer into the water and stopped for a moment.
Apparently, he decided that he needed the trailer in deeper, backed up some more and never stopped until the rear end of the car floated up. He climbed out of the window, scurried up the ramp and stood there holding on to the hood, as if he were trying to keep the vette from floating away.

I think the trailer was holding it in place.

I had a buddy that towed a jet ski with a GT mustang. It was completely worthless pulling anything. If the back tires even got a little damp you were finished. I don't think that its worth the trouble.

I can get a hitch that would handle the weight. I just want a camaro pretty bad, but I don't want to give up the boat too. Oh well.

Hitch handleing the weight isnt the problem, the problem is going to lie in tounge weight tearing the unibody inhalf. And in losing that som bitch on a slick launch.

I know someone who tows a fairly large boat with his 1982 firebird with a built 400 SM. Works pretty well, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I think I speak for f-body owners everywhere-PLEASE wait a little longer, save a little more. Buy yourself a decent 80's or even 70's half ton pickup. Hell, if the boat's not that big, buy a cheap foreign pickup. These vehicles were not designed to tow anything. You could probably get away w/ a jetski or small alum. flatbottom, but why take the chance? Get an old chevy w/ a decent 350, they're easier to work on and parts are cheap. Alot cheaper and less embarasing than sinking a camaro.

Don't worry I am not going to get a camaro. I wanted to ask and see if anyone had done it. If I am lucky gm will get off its *** and build a respectable SS silverado. Basically my only other choice is a lightning, and I would rather not do that. My s10 just doesn't cut it. Its no so much a matter of saving the money for another vehicle, its the fact that my condo complex won't allow me to have another car in the complex. Parking is limited, so I need something that can do both.

Steve Heino (owner of McGee's Auto in Lake Oswego, OR) did a very neat hitch arrangement on their Camaro SS Convertible.

He removed the rear bumper cover, welded in a hitch with his own design stuff, cut the bumber cover around the license plate and hinged it. To run the hitch, he has to fold down the license plate and use the hitch insert. When not in use, it is spring loaded up and you can't tell.

His trailer has an SS front end and hood melded onto an SS rear end. They sit on a trailer base and use standard SS wheels. Really neat, but is not anywhere NEAR as heavy as a boat.

Personally, I wouldn't haul more than, maybe, 750 pouinds with an SS ... and the trailer tongue weight ahd better be small. It is simply not sprung for it, and the clutch is not made with towing in mind.

Just ask the Vette owver several posts above! Of course, that was more of a mental fart than a case of unsuitable towing.
