Rpm's at 70mph
Rpm's at 70mph Hello just got a 2000 SS 6 gear camaro, which I believe is totally stock. Sold a1994 lt1 6 speed car. My question is what rpm,s should I expect at 70mph. Im only turning 1500 in 6th gear seems low. I used to turn 1800 with the lt1. I just hope someone didnt put a higher gear ratio in it. I didnt feel like jacking the car up and counting the driveshaft revolutions. Ive been told that the low range is weaker in the ls1 and it feels much less powerful down low that the lt1 did.

On the highway cruising in 6th will get you good mileage especially for a V8 car. There are some new 6 cyl cars that won't get that kind of mileage LOL. In the city your mileage all depends on how much you keep your foot out of it. Which as I'm sure you already know is pretty difficult to do.

As far as down low power I think that's a bit incorrect. My old lt1 auto made peak power at 2200rpm but didn't have more power down low than my ls1... It's the fact that my lt1 fell off up top where as the ls1 keeps pulling that makes it feel that way.. Welcome to the strangest feeling on earth... Feeling slow yet running pretty quick times.

Thanks for the info, I compete in purestock drag racing witha 1969 4 speed 440 sixpack all original super bee. So Im a pretty seasoned drag racer I ran 12.67 at 109.8 certified stock on 5 inch bias ply tires. The best I ever got out of my 100 percent original lt1 car was 13.99 with 2.0 60 at 100mph. I seen u ran 13.19 at 108 thats awesome for a stocker. I noticed that the mid range in these cars really comes on strong. Ive been told the rear axle is the weak link. I pretty much never granny shift when racing so I dont want to break it with 6000 rpm powershifts. Im going to put a ls6 intake on it with a tune and throttle body. Im not going to beat the car much it's only got 35k on it. The car should run hard when needed and still get 24mpg on pump gas unbelievable compared to 9mpg at 8 dollars a gallon race gas in my 69 Bee..
Yeah been really happy with the LS1.. my own driving holds me back but it seems to have power everywhere. I have a little over 200 1/4 mile passes on the car and do my fair share of aggressive driving with the stock rear end holding up ok so far. While it's a weak link there's no reason to be too gentle with it unless you get really sticky tires on the thing.
The biggest issue with power shifting these things is the clutch often won't release fast enough. There is a drill mod to take care of it..but I often find 3rd gear is unavailable when trying to shift it too fast. Other than that it's been pretty solid...150K on it and I drive year round in IL (snow included).

Wow im glad to hear they are so durable. I ran the car the other day against my friends 2003 mach 1 mustang through the first 3 gears at 6000 rpm full on powershifts and it shifted great. I put about 3 cars open on him and was very impressed. His car runs 13.50's so it's probally a low 13 second car. It does have a cold air kit on it. Other than that totally stock. Ya your like me with my Bee it's a very valuable old muscle car and Ive taken down the track over 400 times and street raced the SH$% out of it. But hey that's what cars were built for right.
