Default Heads/Cam Question!

I'm looking at a cam package from Advanced Induction, but my question is, is it worth to do my heads now? Or should I wait until down the road? Trying to get some opinons on what to do.

Car is a '98 Z m6.

Sure it's worth it if you have the extra money to do it right now, but if not, just the cam and a good dyno tune alone will yield a huge jump in power.

Well, the reason I'm considering is the fact that if I'm already going to have them grind me a cam why not spend the extra coin now and get my heads done. My car however has 167k or so, runs strong. Would it be better then to get the heads down because of the mileage?

Gotcha, might as well do it all at once if you can, that definitely won't hurt anything. 167k, that thing has got some good miles on it, I would still probably go for it and get the H/C now, then just replace things if they ever were to break, as long as you have the cash. If not, instead of the H/C I'd probably start looking into a new bottom end instead before I really started adding large amounts power to a motor with that many miles.

This is going to sound stupid, but what exactly would they do to the heads? Like the process and how would it help?

? reword that please...

if you are specing a cam and heads together they might mill the heads some to bump the compression since they will know about what PTV clearances they will be giving you. so if u want more compression they will want to know that before they spec u a cam etc...

let's try again, what does it mean to have heads "ported" like how is that versus stock heads? also AI offers 4 different packages each obviously rising in cost, the one that I looked at originally was the performance rebuild, but would that even be worth it? A lot of this is really new to me..

porting heads is opening them up some to allow for more airflow in and out... probably performance rebuilt is a stock head that has been modified/ported to increase its performance but the actual casting is stock. aftermarket castings (heads AFR/Trick Flow/etc) usually have a thicker deck than stock heads allowing for more modification and strength.... and that is about the extent of my basic knowledge of these things. I have heard though that CNC porting is usually a better route of porting than by hand but there are some people out there that know how to do it by hand and are very successful in doing so.

Alright thank you! I plan on calling AI tomorrow and hopefully he can explain it better to me and actually explain what each package entails. I want to really understand if it's worth the money, which I'm sure it is.

I think there is a sticky somewhere that helps you with cams and it gives you a whole range of different ones that are out there, Try e-mailing Texas Speed or Advanced Induction and they can help you a lot.
