Default firebird/trans am rear end swap??

Hello guys, new here and need help with my 99 TA. I have some chattering in my rear end while driving, and of course, the rear is leaking a little. I'm going to pop the cover off and put a new gasket on and service it up with fresh oil first, but if that doesn't make a difference, i'm going to get a new rear end, instead of wasting the time and money rebuilding this one. I'm not planning on boosting the HP up too much, or I would just buy a 9". My question is, can i take a rear end out of a 98-02 firebird/camaro(v6) and bolt it in??? what cars came with what gear ratios, etc??? Thanks alot guys.

Buy an aftermarket rear end.

I wouldnt bother putting in another rear from a V6 or even an LS1, I would just buy a 12 bolt or 9in and call it a day if your intial repairs dont fix the problem. Autos came with 3.23's and 6 speeds came with 3.42's and are all 3 channel (ABS). If you have traction control (TCS), then its a 4 channel rear. If you install a rear that is 3 channel in a 4 channel car, the TCS light will always be on. Can get pretty annoying.

Mine failed in my 99 WS6 with longtube headers, off-road y pipe and loudmouth exhaust. I would say that qualifies as "not boosting the HP up too much", which is why I said not to bother with another stock rear of any kind. It's a big expense so hopefully the repairs fix your problem and give you some time to save up if you need it.

If you have an auto and aren't planning on making much more than stock power, I wouldn't spend the money on the aftermarket rear unless you race a lot. Buy a rear end girdle and the thing can last. People on here act like they are made of glass.

The v6 cars usually have open an open carrier so if you don't mind doing one wheel burnouts yes

It isn't quite as clear cut as that. He was asking about rear ends in the V-6 Firebird.

My '97 Firebird A4 auto V-6 had the 2.73 gears in the rear and did the one wheel burn-out, if you could get it to spin, that is.

My '01 Firebird A4 auto V-6 came with the 3800 Performance Package which had the 3.42 Torsen rear normally found in only the V-8 manuals but only offered in the automatic for the V-6 PP. Not the 3.23's in my current TA, 3.42s. The 3.42 was too low geared for a A4 but was pretty quick off the line for a V-6.

"The 3800 Performance Package added P235/55R16 touring tires, Zexel Torsen II Limited Slip, uplevel steering, dual exhaust outlets and 3.42:1 axle ratio (available only with the automatic transmition)" From the Standard Catalog of Firebird (Gunnell)

if im doing a clone conversion on my 99 firebird...do you have to change rear ends? or will the driveshaft from a v8 trans work on the v6 rear end?
