It does what relays and switches used to do, because
obviously a computer is much better at rolling down a
window.
That, and it rats you out to the insurance company
after you wreck at speed.

Does it not send a 40Hz signal to the PCM, telling it that the key is a match for the solenoid? Which in turn, allows the PCM to keep the engine running after the first 5 seconds?
The people I bought my car from, thought there was a "fuel system" problem with mine. They didn't realize the rats ate the VATS purple wire between the PCM and BCM. This caused the car to crank up, then shut off after a few seconds.
