Default Car boils out of overflow

So I finally got a chance to take my car to the drag strip yesterday and after a couple 1/8th mile passes it starts to get hot and boil over. It did this last year the only time I got to take and was told that I needed a new radiator cap. It has a 160 degree thermostat, new radiator and new cap. Not sure what I am doing wrong, but hopefully someone can help me out. BTW the car is pretty much all stock. No engine mods done yet...

Does it only do this when you run it hard?

Are you sure there is water in it, like no more than %50 antifreeze?

If you have infrared temp gun, get the car up to at least 160 degrees. Shut it off be for it overheats. Scan the coolant system and see if its up to temperature. If not you water pump might not be up to par, or have a clog somewhere.

Also check for any kind of leak, if the system is sealed you will boil coolant.

Try pulling the thermostat completly out and running it, see what that does...."you can still do this on ls1's like the old sb2s? right???" and also look at your water pump, or water pump pulleys....

It only runs water. Antifreeze only when it sits for the winter. This is a project I started last year and haven't had any time to work on it. For the drag strip only!

I have not changed my water pump, but will look into replacing it next.

Yes it only seems to do it when I run the car hard. I also must say that the warmer the car is the better it runs at the track.

If it only runs hot when you push it I bet you have air in the coolant system.

Jack up front of the car(I had my front tires off about 6" off the ground) Remove radiator cap. Their is a coolant line that goes from your steam line thru your TB and into radiator... Remove the end that is connected to radiator. Leave steam line and TB hooked up. Start your engine. It will need to get to operating temp. Run engine til you get a FULL STREAM of coolant coming out of the Hose... This will take 10-20mins or so(I forgot how long it took me) you will end up puting in coolant/water to fill space that the air took up.

Hopefully you have air in your system. So this is all you will need to do.

When your water pump goes out it will start to leak. So you should be good on that.

Goodluck!
