Default Rocker Arm bolts sealant?

Hi,
Im in the process of replacing a bent pushrod (from suspected excess RPM) & noticed on the bolts holding the rocker arms an orange coloured substance on the tapered part/underside of the bolt head.
Is the sealant of some kind or just paint?
Thanks.

Off the top of my head there was no sealant applied to the bolts. But I will suggest that if these are stockers, you replace all with hardened while in there. And a trunion kit might be in order.

If your heads are ported you should apply some HI-TEMP RTV silicone to the intake bolts. Usually the porting will open up the bottom of the threaded hole in the intake runner of the head.

This is the correct answer. On almost every ported head I have seen this occurs so it is common practice to use the RTV Silicone to seal the port.

I am pretty sure the OP is referring to the rocker arm bolts and not those of the head itself.

Yes the rocker arm bolts.

Here's a pic of my P/P 317 heads. Look to the upper right side of the intake runner. http://mycarpics.shutterfly.com/190
See the hole, that is the intake rocker arm bolt hole. The material that was removed during the porting process opens up the bottom of the "blind" hole.

The stock rocker bolts can protrude into the intake port on CNCed heads
Edelbrock makes some shorter bolts just for this purpose.

No, the heads are standard. The ony mods are the ignition kit, the carburettor & the exhaust.

It replaces the center section of the rocker arm with a better design and bearing. Some people have found their oil drain plug magnet covered in little needle bearings from a failed rocker. It's just a good bit of insurance when you go with bigger cams and stiffer springs that are stressing the OEM rocker.

Just for clarification; apply RTV to the threads, then install?

Will it take place of thread locker?

Yes, wipe a little RTV on the threads and torque it down. No tread locker needed.

Excellent. Thanks.

Thread locker on the exhaust side? Or just use more RTV?

You can use either on the exhaust side. I used hi-temp red RTV on both exhaust and intake bolts just because i had it out on the work bench.
