Default 470 RWHP on stock rear end

I am contemplating on buying a trans am that is built with a forged 383 stroker fully built it has pretty much everything except the stock rear end. I have read on here that it is usually the weak link... What do you guys think would it be safe if I didn't beat the hell out of it??? It is a 6spd as well.

If you drove it easy, I mean really easy, it may last...but you'd be on borrowed time for sure. You don't know how the previous owner drove it for sure. Is it whining at all or anything?

I'm not sure if it is whining or not, I will have to drive a bit to see the car. How much does an upgraded diff normally cost?.

Diff, or whole new rear end? A new 9" rear is gonna be in the ball park of 3K.

Sponsors run sales on them. S60 is heavier than a 9" but Carl over at CRP has a great deal on them. For 9" talk to Bob at Brutespeed or the guys at Midwest Chassis. For a solid 9" or S60 depending on options, you're looking at $2500-$4150

Figure 3k for the rear, and another k for good measure, related to suspension components, fluid, randoms, ect.

At least that's how mine ended up
I blew 2 10 bolts on zero upgrades. I also was not very nice at the 1/4 to it.

My stock 10 bolt has been living at 520rwhp for a while now. I just take it easy in 1st gear and it seems to working. I know its on borrowed time but I'm going to run it until it blows and then drop 3-4 K.

All the threads I have read about the stock 10 bolt is hit or miss, some live at a very high hp level and some pop on stock power. I guess my rear wasn't built on a Friday or a Monday, Lol.

i make 425hp on mustang dyno. i also have 4.10 gears and 315mm drag radial which i still use with stock rear axle... just no dumping the clutch or trips to the drag strip and you will be ok!

p.s. i beat the **** outta mine on street, 1st gear and all

i had stock 275/40r17 generic crap tires, LTs ORY and boral cat back and thats it, and i completely cracked the whole diff around, came out in 2 pieces, never had slicks or launched hard, just caught a few gears here and there, get it and save for a 9" imo

I would save for a nice 9 inch or another built unit. My 10 bolt in my T/A lasted about a year under the 500hp that I threw at it. I got lucky and it still was in one piece when I sold the car....I personally am a fan of fabricated rears but depends on how much you have in the piggy bank

I wouldn't chance it.

People that say they are going to run it till it blows must have money flowing out of their ears. A good 10 bolt is worth 300 to 500. A blown 10 bolt is worth scrap prices. When I bought my 9 inch for 3k I sold my 10 bolt for 500 to offset the cost a little

mines been holding at that level for a bit and no noise or issues but i dont beat the crap out if it and wouldnt expect to launch it hard and repeatedly either. if your mostly driving it on the street and use common sense it will work for a while a long while but eventually you will prob have something give up.

I've got to agree with others.. it's hit or miss and most likely on borrowed time behind a T56. I grenaded the rear-end in a 94 Z28 first time at the track after swapping it to a 6SPD with bolt-on LT1 power, spun from the dig feathered out nailed the gas again and got a perfect hook... and that was the end of the night for me. Yet the 10 bolt in my current car has been fine (it really doesn't see the track) but it has been launched hard on drag radials quite a bit, not too much from a dig though and probably why it's still alive.

There's a lot of variables in how long that rear will live.. to be better safe than sorry I would go ahead and add the 3-4K for a new rear end into your potential purchase price to get a real idea of how much it's going to cost you. Besides do you really want to have to worry everytime you want to get throttle happy? *shrug* I wouldn't

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I'm going to go ahead with the car and put some money back for a new rear.

I broke my 10 bolt one time just pulling into a parking space a restaurant. Save your money and watch the classifieds for a poor soul thats wrecked the front end of his car and starts parting it out. Thats how I found mine.
