Default Can someone set the record straight?

I've been reading all night about LQ4 and LQ9 engines. I have one and I'm wanting some more hp before I put it into my 67 Nova. I'm on a budget (like everyone else) and I read that the Ls3 stock heads will work with the lq4/9 block but I have to watch my PTV clearance.. I PM'd a vendor on hear and he told me to stay away from them b/c I'll lose my hp/tq down low. He mentioned to go with the ported 243 heads. At $650 for the pair of LS3 heads it just seem like a sweet head with a custom cam. I really don't want to mess with the bottom end, so this is either a go or no go for me. I'm looking for the 450rwhp range with heads, cam, ls3 intake, and headers.

You don't need LS3 heads to hit 450 rwhp, ported the stock LQ heads will get you there with the right cam combo. Either route you decide it will cost about the same. The LS3 setup might give you a few more ponies w/ the better heads.

Thx for the reply. But I haven't seen any ported ls heads under $1000? If they will be about
the same in performance and the ls3 heads are cheaper and will work fine with no loss in performance then why not use them? I was told that with anything under a 4.1xx bore the ls3 intake runner and valves are just to large for the 4.0 bore block.

On a small bore motor I think your better off w/ the 243's/317s. Apparently the Vendor you contacted felt the same way. I would pick up a complete LQ4/9 send the heads of to AI or TEA for porting then top it off w/ a Fast...Sounds like your bench building, a heads/cam build is the last place you want to nickle and dime.

the big valves of the ls3 head mite hurt flow on a smaller bore .check Texas Speed for heads,ls6 st 1 or 5.3 st 2.5.you could sell your stock heads to off set the cost of ported heads.

Find a used set of Patriot cnc ported heads, or keep what you have and get a vvt cam from comp cams. Also an ls3 does not have a 4.1xx bore size.

You're getting good advice here in this thread, but since you already have them we will just work around it.

No biggie
