Unhappy 2000 Trans Am Speedometer help

I am new to this forum, but have owned my 2000 WS-6 TA since new. It now has 43,000 miles. Recently, without any warning the speedometer (and odometer) quit working. I went through the factory service manuals and decided that even though I could step through the diagnostics, I probably don't have all of the test capability that the dealer would have, so I reluctantly brought it in. Prior to that I replaced the vehicle speed sensor, which did not fix it. They have now rewired the circuit, replaced the instrument panel and now tell me it needs a new PCM, which is now on order. Any advice? Could they have avoided this mess? Will the new PCM fix the problem?
