Default 2000 Trans Am (Power Steering)

Hey fellas I'm a straight Newb to the forum no doubt, I have an Lt1 z28 and an Ls1 trans am, my Trans am has been really starting to get hard to turn the wheel and I can hear it grind sometimes when it does it, is the power steering pump a DIY type of job, or should I take it to my mechanic, if so what should I expect to pay, thanks for any feedback, glad to be a part of this cool *** website!

First off, make sure you at least have fluid in there lol.

It can by a DIY job but you need a special tool to get the pulley off (you can rent them at AutoZone). Write up + how to video here.

Lol, I'm not a straight Newb when it comes to these cars just never messed with a power steering pump in either, I had it topped off today at Jiffy Lube and it didn't help, the pulley looks good still no scrapes, but I'm afraid the pump is gone.

Can anyone reccomend a good brand of power steering pumps, preferably with an aluminum Pulley, not a stock plastic piece of ****.

I actually think the rack and pinions are bad, it's not leaking P/S fluid so you're prob right thanks man!

Ended up being a bolt from the column rubbing against one of the heads. We just beat the head up a little and shaved some of the bolt off and it's turning like new again!

Glad you got it fixed so easy. The power steering pumps are notorious for going out on these cars.
