5.3 turbo build need advice
Ok so I've been reading threads on here about building a turbo 5.3. I want to run at least 500rwhp. I like Hot Rod magazines junkyard build they did...

I plan on using most of the parts they listed but the cam they listed is discontinued, (the gm 01' ls6 camshaft 12560950) which one could I use instead. Also I plan on getting forged rod and pistons to prevent future failure. Which ones would y'all recommend would be best for my buck. I don't want to spend a fortune. I'm also stuck on which turbo to buy, I heard on3's is garbage and have read many complaints, I also heard bad stuff about cxracings turbo's. I would like to spend $500 max on a turbo. I'm fairly new to LS performance so I'm here to learn. My build list is as followed.
•Ls6 valve springs.
•Stock heads
•Ls6 camshaft
•ls1 intake manifold or ported ls6 which ever is better
•forged rod and pistons(not sure what brand)
•stock crank
•arp head studs
•new AC delco lifters
I think that's everything I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Please fill free to correct anything I have wrong and give me as much advise as possible. BTW MY 5.3 right now in my truck is all stock with ls1 accessories like intake manifold, injectors, fuel rails and throttle body.

The cam,intake, springs, head studs sound good. I wouldnt bother with the bottom end if you are only looking for 500 whp.
Need injectors and 044 pump too.
I have twin CX 67's on my small block. They work great. Have heard good things about the On3 as well. Sure you will hear some bad stuff, but I wonder how many of those folks actually have run the turbos. I like them. You can get rebuild kits for some of the Chinese turbos and if they break, you can buy 3-4 more for the price of a big name unit.

If it is a high mileage motor, taking the bottom end apart to gap the rings might be a waste of time. Mine were perfectly gaped after 150K miles of use on the truck motor. It would be cheap insurance to check them though.

Check out the Siemens Deka injectors and you will need to calculate how much injector you will need. Without crunching the numbers, I would say you should be in the 60# range. You will be maxing out the 42# injectors I would think and paying top dollar since they say Ford on them(which you don't want anyways, right. haha)
Gapping the rings provides additional piston ring clearance which you will need with added cylinder pressure(boost).
My high mileage motor was where I wanted it to be. I had to clearance a couple of rings only a thousandth of an inch or so.

Yes, mine work great. Only had them for 6 months though. Time will tell. Mine are not GT45's. I think those are the bigger turbos, 76's or something like that. I hear they are good for a single setup. I have twin 67's on my Chevelle.

I think you need to use spacers on the fuel rail for the long ones. Not sure. You will also want to research the injector connectors since you might need adapters or rewire new connectors. You should be able to do a search for the injectors and find some good info. I havent gotten there yet and dont want to give you bad info.

I've just heard from so many people that the ebay turbos hold up and they are great for the price. I am interested in your ls6 cam. When I bought my truck it had this cam in it but I had a lifter fail. Is this a good cam if I plan on boosting my motor? 228 int 228 exh .588/.588 114LSA ? I only wanna make around 500rwhp so I want to know what I need to do to make this thing reliable it will be my daily.

Really couldn't tell ya. Im not a cam designer. Probably going to depend a lot on the valve timing and everything else that goes into it. Im guessing though that your cam was designed a lot more for a N/A build. I do know that on a budget people have gotten really nice results from the 02 ls6 cam. I was going to run it but decided to go with a TU1 cam because i want a little lope in my car and once again that cam has had very good proven results

Why aren't you going to use it? I read when looking at can specs the number before Lsa is what you look at as far as it lowering compression. Not sure if it's true though.
