Default Just bought some heads... have ?

Just bought these partially CNC'd heads from the classifieds here. Got them in today and I noticed that one of the combustion chambers has a good sized chunk machined away, considering how far and deep it is, is this head still even useable?

Pics:

Thanks!

I'm no expert by any means, but that's a pretty significant piece of material missing. I don't believe it's safe to run that head. You may want to take it to a local machine shop and see what they say. I'm sure they could fix it by welding up that part and then milling the heads. Also, not sure what you mean when you say "partially CNC'd". They are either ported or they aren't.

The heads were used as r&d heads so only half of the chambers have been ported and like 1/3rd The runners. I was planning on sending them to ai to get their port job done, but I guess I'll have to talk to a machine shop first

I'd send a picture of the head to Phil at AI and see what he says. They do cylinder head repair work there too, but it would likely be an additional cost. Back when I was talking to Phil about the possibility of him porting some 243 heads for me, he said occasionally people send him heads to port that are too damaged for him to port. Start with sending him a picture and go from there.

You got those from someone off this site and they didn't disclose that piece was machined away? No pictures of it before hand? I'd be a little upset if that were the case.

Uh yeah that missing chunk is goin to mess up the compression on that one cylinder, and also create a hot spot on the edge which will cause detonation.

The good news for you OP is it can be fixed. That part can be welded up and decked. I'm sure AI can take care of that for you. I just hope you didn't pay much for those heads.

WEll, there was one pic of it in the listing, but it wasn't really easy to see, and the seller didn't really disclose it.

Phil told me it'd be $25 to fix, so that's not a huge deal.

FOr the heads themselves I only paid about 250

What port program are you going to have AI perform?

You're in good hands with Phil, I've heard nothing but good things about them. That's where my heads will go when I have them redone. And the $25 is a cheap fix
