My 98 TA auto has an uneven idle and when driving at a steady throttle position the RPMs are going up and down, although they seem fine on hard acceleration. My tach is also not working but my mechanic has narrowed that down to either the crankshaft position sensor or the ECM. What would cause this uneveness - could the cps be a cause or could it be something like a vacuum leak?

My RPM gauge used to jump up & down it wouldnt stay at a steady position.. The vacuum Hose that connects on the side of the intake right behind the throttle body on the Pass. side had a cut in it.. I fixed it then adjusted my idle screw & every thing is fine now...
