Default noise

The engine on my 00 ws6 had made clicking noise since I bought it. I heard that this is somewhat normal on a ls1 but my friend has a 00 formula and his is extremely quite. It sounds like it is coming from the valve covers. I was just wondering is this normal and how can I make this sound less noticeable like my friends?

Thanks

Can we get more info on the car?

M6 or A4
Mods...

Did you buy the car used. Sounds like the previous owner may have bent a pushrod..

The car is an A4 and the only mod I have done is a cat-back. I bought car about six months ago from a creditable dealership. It is a 00 and had 35000 miles when i bought it.I dont race that much and I dont rag it out. The car runs fine but the engine is just louder than my friends.

If that's the case, then you just may have one of the LS1's with terrible piston slap. Not many fixes for it.

dont want to jack a thread here, but Is piston slap really damaging to the engine? Also to provide a possible answer to your question. It may not be piston slap, it may just be a loud valve train. A way to find out if it is just a loud valve train, is to add Lucas Oil Stabilizer. I have heard that it quiets the valve train a lot, by keeping oil up in the valve covers better when there is not as much oil pressure.

I put some oil treatment in and it made it a lot quiter. I guess my car just has a noisy valve train. But that treatment helped tremendously!

Thanks

If you use that stuff too much, it leaves a residue that could cause problems down the road. I've done a few engines that have been overran with oil treatment and it's not pretty! Just my 2 cents.

You should just try running a heavier weight oil. What are you currently using? I'd stay as far away from those thick *** oil stabilizers as I could.

Like someone mentioned. If used for too long, you won't like what you see if you ever have to open that engine.

I had a noisy valvetrain too, piston slap on cold mornings since about 25,000 mile, I thought about lucas oil stabilizer until I tried the german made castrol 0-30w, my engine is quieter on start up and fairly quiet when running. Patman suggested using it and I am a believer, but I am wondering what he thinks of lucas oil stabilizer, Any thoughts Patman?
