Default Cam decision

I have a 2000 firebird formula. I plan on getting headers and y pipe, ls6 intake, and slp intake lid. Is there anything else I should do before a cam swap? What would be the best cam? For right now it is my daily driver but I’m looking to get a good amount of power from the cam swap.

Bingo, Gears and Converter (if auto). Cam is great power per $ at a must at a certain point, but HCI2000SS is talking about acceleration.

You may want to take a look at our SUM-8707 Pro LS Stage 2 cam at this stage for a true daily driver. 226/238 113+3 and designed around the common and affordable .600 lift spring packs. It tunes well and would match the rest of your combination. We have spring kits and other things you will need to get the job done the first time. Your car may have some miles on it, so there are some things that may need replaced at the same time like lifters and the chain depending.

We'd recommend getting it tuned (at least the first time) by a knowledgeable local tuner that has access to a chassis dyno. The reason is several fold, but being that you're in the New Owners section...it's good to find mechanical limitations and weaknesses early to avoid hurting something. An example of this would be the limits of your injectors...they are 27.3 lbs. and good for approximately 390 at the wheels depending on the duty cycle. When you do go bigger on the injectors, they will have knowledge of some that are characterized -which will help maintain driveability as you develop the car. There are other things the tuner will optimize, but most importantly give input on what to do next. They'll know what works and what's a waste of time.

You're going to need to be careful with the exhaust system. You'll hear "true duals" tossed around a lot from people that have tried single 3's. Around 400 is what you can expect with that cam and probably slightly to the higher side. Head work could put you into the 430 range easily. Speed density and more intake around 450 without getting into fuels, pulleys, vacuum pumps etc.

So if I choose a cam that size I will most likely need to upgrade injectors?

Likely,, but the good thing is you can put it together, and keep the injector money in reserve and see what your injector duty cycle with the current injectors looks like and with the tuner decide if you "need" bigger ones.. I seem to have the best luck staying at or below 75% ,, but there is no science behind that its just how things worked out..

First thing we need to know is what cylinder heads you have before any Cam Recommendations. And if it was me I would do Stall, Exhaust, gears, rocker arm upgrade (before any performance cam) and all the free mods first. Then get some decent ported 243s and then pick your camshaft last.

FYI, 400whp will tear up a stock clutch in no time. So you'll need to figure in the cost of a good clutch as well if needed.

Having a 6spd is always nice you dont gotta worry about converters as far as the "best" cam no one person can really answer that question for you it is all going to depend on what you want to do with the car. all out racecar, weekend warrior , sunday cruiser and what you are willing to put up with because every person is going to have their opinion of what is best, I would recommend calling people like texas speed, brian tooley or vengeance racing and talk to them about your car and they could pick out a good cam for your application

Texas speed 218/224 is a good cam if you don’t want it to be rowdy but you do want a little lope. If you want rowdy then a 227-228 intake and 234 exhaust will get you that along with 7000rpm shift speed.
