Winter / Summer Thermostat My garage queen 98 Z28 may be pressed into daily use this winter provided there is no snow, salt or rain in the forecast. Need to keep mileage down on my truck lease. My car was tuned with the 160 degree thermostat. Because of how cold it can get here, I was considering swapping to a stock temp thermostat. Would this be a bad idea since it’s been tuned for the 160? I don’t plan on driving it hard. |

You should be good until mid/late November. Once they salt the road once you're done until May. As long as there's snow melting the salt will keep draining back onto the road. That April rain gets people thinking the salt is gone and then they get bitten by rot. I've driven around Mass with a 160 stat and never had an issue. Depending on the day and driving time you may never get hot enough to open the stat or trigger the fans anyway. |
I haven't been running a thermostat since 2008 here in NE Ohio. It may take a few more minutes to get engine heat for heater and defroster but never had a problem. Never affected starting in 'open loop' and going to 'closed loop'. |

This. I've driven both on cold winter days and it takes longer for the 160 car to get up to operating temp and thus warm air into the car. That's it. |
A few years back I drove my '84 Lesabre from Mansfield to Nashua and back without a radiator. I wouldn't recommend it though. It took a chilly November day and no traffic on 95 to manage it. Needless to say I couldn't put the heat on in the car. |
