Default Thermostat Recommendation

Hi. Can anyone tell me the recommended thermostat temp for an LS1? Mine actually came without a themostat in it and I was going to put a 190 degree thermostat in but a friend said I should put in a 160 because I live in a hot climate. Any thoughts? Thanks!

LS1s originally came with 86°C (187°F) T-stats.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the 160° T-stats for the vast majority of LS1 applications. I would either stick with stock or (since you don't have the stock one anyway) do a 180° if you want one that's slightly cooler.

I agree with RPM, stock or 180. I still have the stock one and never have had any problems.

If overheating is a problem (it shouldn't be, I live in a very hot state), the stock thermostat won't be your problem. You want the thermostat to do its job and get your car up to operating temperature so the metals can expand and the oils to become the correct viscosity. You could always have a tuner lower the temperature at which your fans start spinning if you wanted.
