Default Port/Polishing Stock exhaust manifolds

Has anyone done this and seen any type of gain? I know if it gives any gain it wont be much, but I am wanting to stay stock appearing and I figured it would be an easy was for a few ponies. I had a friend give me a set of stock exhaust manifolds so I thought I would ask, thanks.

i doubt you would see any significant gains...headers arent really noticeable....especially midlength headers

Make sure they are the newer manifolds if you are gonna do this.

It isn't worth the price, though.

You could get a cheap set of LT's for what it would cost.

I was given these from a buddy (they are off an 01' and thats what I will be putting it on) and I have another buddy that does port and polishing and said it would not take too long so he is going to do it for free as a side project for me, so all I have to do it take out the old ones and put these in, a few hours for a few ponies? Sounds nice to me since I want to stay appearing stock.

I was just curious if anyone had done this or heard of this being done before and if they gained anything.

Don't waste your time or money. Just buy some headers and call it a day.

Dood's, not trying to be an @$$, but he DID say "I Want to stay STOCK APPEARING"

I take that to mean he doesn't want to have headers on the car.

I say if you got the couple of hours to swap them out, go for it, just do a before-and-after dyno and see for yourself if there's really anything there.

My suggestion would be to look elsewhere for power if he's trying to stay stock looking. Porting/polishing stock manifolds is like putting perfume on a pig.

No doubt, you make a good point there (funny one too!) but you gotta remember how 3 ponies here and 5 ponies there really start to add up, just look at how many people on here have done the "Free Mods"

Granted, they are less work to do, how much power does each one actually add? But do them all, and it's worth it, right?

See, every little bit helps!

(Wow, I was quoted by Unit, how cool is that!)

i am about to start porting my 00 exhaust manifolds as well, i cant fit a set of long tubes on my 68 so i will save my money for now to get a custom set built later down the road! but i am very intersted in what kind of difference it will make! if you cant get dyno numbers, then if you can get some track times to see if there is any improvement. if it is a stock car i dont think it will help that much, but if you have a cam in there i bet it will!

I hear what you're saying. It just seems like a lot of work for a couple of extra ponies. Free mods are very easy to do. I'm all for it if this guy has the time/money/equipment to P&P the stock manifolds. I think he'd be a first too. I just think it's a wasted effort.

Stock appearing sounds like a H/C package or a stroker motor to me.

I ported mine in under an hour with a die grinder and
carbide burr. I relieved the input ports to match the
carbon ring left by the gaskets. I did not "polish" or
anything so fancy as the walls felt reasonably smooth
to me.

Can't say as I noticed anything big out of it, more of
a "good as it can be, given what it is" kind of deal.
I'm sure the stock cats are worse than the stock
manifolds in terms of backpressure contribution.

I have a 2000 Z28 that I'm about to put into smog trim.

I picked up a set of 02 manifolds because they supposedly flow better. I would just suggest getting a set of manifolds from newer LS1.

Please no flaming. But I had my manifolds ported & polished for $150.00 and went about a .10 to .15 faster on the 1/8 mile track. And that was on my 2001 manifolds. Had a friend with a 2001 corvette that went 7 mph faster on the 1/8 mile track by porting & polishing the manifolds and gutted out his cats, and I did some tuning on it. Not bad.
I would say it was a good "bang" for the buck on this one. Of course no one will argue that they will do as good as long tube headers but if you want stock looking exhaust, and less trouble with 02 sensors, this is a great opinion, much better than has been told so far on this forum.

LOL no I really mean 7 mph.

Let me list again what he did:

1. Ported & polished exhaust manifolds
2. Gutted cats
3. Tunning (which it needed badly!)

Before the above was done, he ran 77 mph. And then after the above he ran 84 mph.
