Default Just bought an 02 Z but the inside stinks (literally)

Well I'm now an official member

Picked up my 02 Z last night.
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...1998&cardist=0

One problem though, the car smells like a$$. I'm guessing the buyer used to smoke and then tryed to cover it up. The dash and leather are really shiny so i think the smoke smell mixed with leather/dash cleaner or something

Anyone have any ideas into making the car smell like it is mine?

I had the same problem when I bought my 99 a few years back. I just bought a bottle of Fabreeze. Spray the hell out of all the carpet, headliner, etc. Pretty much anything thats fabric. It will not stain. Close the car up over night. Next morning I just let the car sit with all the windows open and T-tops if you have them, for a few hours. After that the car smelled good as new. Of course the Fabreeze will have a slight smell for a couple of days, so just get an air freshner. If the smell is very bad repeat a few days later...

The smell I have been told is due to a poorly designed ventilation system. Condensation collects in the heater/ac vents and then it putrifies thus causing the smell.
I keep my car in the garage with the windows cracked open and no smell anymore.

Careful with the febreeze on that leather. Id vacuum and really clean it all up inside then do a febreeze and let it air out.

also, if its the vent, turn your a/c on high, take a can of lysol, and spray near the entire thing into the induction (for the a/c, in front of the windshield) and that takes away the smell of mold or the bad smell of condensation. there was this stuff that turtle wax used to make, for like smokers, or anyone who didnt want the wife to know what they were doin. i had a friend that smoked pot, and to test it out, i sprayed it on the inside of his cloth interiored truck. it smelled like a new car, couldnt smell anything. if you can find this stuff, its in a small spray bottle and its yellow, made by turtle wax.

thanks for the advice guys.

I took out the back seat last night and found some goop that was in between the seats . Not sure if it was leather cleaner, leftover puke, or what, but its gone now. I'll have to try some of your spray suggestions next.

Maybe the previous owner just had BO

Try one of those boxes of Arm and Hammer. See what kind of crud it sucks up. That stuff was like gold when the hurricanes came through Florida. Kept the fridge from smelling like rotten eggs.

my uncle bought a can of air sanitizer from the autoparts store this weekend for his girlfriends ride. she was having a bit of a mouse problem lol its a metal aerosol can. kills all bacteria and leaves a semi-air freshener smell behind. try that in the a/c induction, under the seats, in the carpet etc. if fabreeze will take care of it, use that and give it hell

Sounds stupid but it works. On a hot day put tomato juice in several uncovered containers in your car and set them about in the car. It works awesome!! Ive have tried it and it works! Leave them in for as long as you can like 8-10 hours make sure that it gets hot in the vehicle. Some how the juice takes up the smell.

If the smell is THAT bad you can always bomb the car. Contact your local furnature store and see what they use to get smokey smell out of furnature that has been in fires. Body shop's use it all the time on fire repairs

Some of the other suggestions will work too

If it is really nasty rent an ozone machine from a local Servicemaster or such. That will kill anything organic,

Otherwise, get odor elmininator, made by atomsklear(I got mine from Bumper to Bumper). If you spray this on all the carpet and fabric you will kill the smell. If that it where it is from.

Hope no one puked down the heat vents That would not be easy!!!!

Good Luck
