Default Which to buy: '96 T/A or '99 T/A

'96 M6 WS-6 Trans Am, 114k, $8,900, 5 Minutes from home (local dealer)
Click for Pictures

or

'99 M6 Trans Am, 114k, $10,500, 5 Hours from home (Houston dealer)
Autotrader URL

I have not seen the one in Houston in person. The local one is in great shape. It starts/runs/drives great. The A/C was just replaced. It comes with a one year warranty on parts and labor w/ $100 deductible. The warranty also includes Roadside Assistance (Gas / Fluids / Up to $50 for towing). The only problem I found is that the shift boot is a little messed up.

Both cars are Black w/ T-Tops (like I was looking for). Both have a clean CarFax report.

My question: Is it worth the 5 Hour drive and extra money for an LS1?

Would you rather have a Sirloin or Filet Mignon?

If you can get the '96 for about $8,000 out the door, I'd get it. I wouldn't drive 5hrs. for a car.

LS1's are easier motors to work on compared to LT1's and the bottom line is more bang for the buck.

I'd go for the faster car and awesome motor they have. Not that LT1's are bad aside from headers that are a PITA to install down to the Opti sparks that take a dump.

The 99 is much nicer looking IMO get the LS1!!

On second thought skip both--you can get a better deal than both of those.

Oh yeah, I happen to have a ~black 99 TA M6 leather chrome wheels t-tops 50k miles~ that I'll sell you for not much more than $10,500. It's got a clean carfax and has never been wrecked. This may sound weird, but I have never even driven it hard, or raced it.

Sounds like a great deal, but you're 13 hours away.

I don't really mind the 5 hour drive. It's just that I was having trouble finding a way to go there in one car and return in two. I have just come to a solution: U-Haul. I'm currently driving a Crew Cab Chevy truck (paid for by my Insurance Company). For $50, I can rent a trailer, drive to Houston, and tow the car back. Looks like I'll be going with the LS1.

Thanks Fellas!

You will be much happier with the ls1, I just upgraded from my '95 TA. I loved that car, but this one is so much better.

Neither, 8 grand seems like a lot for an lt1 ws6, especially with those miles...yeah they are rare, but for about the same money you'd be a fool not to buy an ls1.This is coming from an lt1 owner...

You can find a better car with lower miles for around 10 grand. I would go ls1 or go home for that kinda money.

I flew to California, and drove a 42 year old car from California to back home home in Ohio....5 hours isn't anything if it's what you want...

yeah, definitely skip on both of those. those arent good deals. look at our classified section on this forum and youll find way better deals than that. and youre in TX. theres a lot of TX cars on here...at least last time i looked.

Go for an LS1, but not that one. You can get a 2001 with probably 50K fewer miles for the same price.

Maybe a Z28, but not a Trans Am.

The prices are too high for both cars though. I'd just take my time and do some more research. I spent 2 months looking for my car and I got a pretty good deal. I would defintely get an LS1 over an LT1 hands down.

I have looked through a substantial amount of the classifieds section here (and yes I've run several searches). I originally found this site by finding a classified post through Google. Most of the cars I've found on this site are priced at least around $13k to $15k for early LS1's. The few I have found in the $10k range I have received no responses from (posts, pm's, or emails). There is only one M6 T/A I have found in Texas and it's still $12.5K

I'd love to take my time and find the right one, but time is what I am lacking. I'm from New Orleans and currently staying with relatives in Texas. I am driving a rental that my insurance is covering for 30 days. I have 10 days left. I can neither afford to keep the rental after that time nor be without a vehicle. On Wednesday we will be returning to New Orleans to salvage what we can of our belongings and vehicles. We will most likely be there for several days. I'd like to get a car before I leave so that I will not be frantically searching with only a few days left on the rental.

I will continue searching the web tonight and will be heading to Houston tomorrow night. Tuesday morning I will look at the vehicles on my list and make a final decision and return to Longview that evening. If you know of any good deals in that area, please let me know.
