new to ls1s, what first mods to do

Ok so im an lt1 guy and but i just bought a 2000 z28 m6 and i have about 2 grand to drop into it. ive done some research but do u guys think this is a good way to spend my money?

texas speed true duals 450ish
lid, cai, smooth bellows, high flow filter, ect. another 450ish
pro 5.0 shifter, lou's short stick 200ish
1" lowering springs 150 (friends gets eibach stuff for cheap)
the rest on some used Z06 rims 17x9.5 up front 18x10.5 in back (of coarse)

i appreciate any advice and sorry if this stuff is written up somewhere and i didn't search right. thanks!

taintedmeat 09-22-2005 07:49 PM

Just get the lid, skip the springs, and use that cash for headers. :)

Lt1FBoDy209 09-22-2005 08:10 PM

eh but i live in cali so they are emmission nazi's. im in college and im only gunna use the car on weekends mostly so im gunna wait till summer to do long tubes and all that good stuff. just looking for some easy hp.

yell03 09-22-2005 08:11 PM

1st mod - 3" cutout - $30 (I did a manual cutout, you will never close it)

2nd mod - Shifter - $200 (I have a Hurst Billet, it comes with a shift knob)

3rd mod - lid - $100 (SLP has nice fit and finish)

Paper filters are cheap and flow fine.

Those 3 mods are must haves. Anything after that is your choice.

Have fun!!!

Howard

i had a cutout on my lt1 and i liked it a lot (i never had it closed) but i wanna go with true duals cuz they just sound mean and i wanna try something new on this car. but if money doesnt permit then cutout it is. (duh)

Casperws6 09-22-2005 08:14 PM

GET A BLOWER.....jk lid and exhaust is a good way to start. look for used stuff, it might save ya some money.

Nsty98LS1 09-22-2005 08:20 PM

if i had to do it all over again i would start with subframe connectors and lower control arms.

Lt1FBoDy209 09-22-2005 08:23 PM

u mean the brackets that are like 40 bucks and take .3 seconds off ur 1/4 mile or something like that? that doesnt sound like a bad idea at all actually. almost forgot thanks. dunno about this sfc tho..as fun as it would be to smash around turns :)

Mod help..

ok guys, yet another question from me... i have about $1,000 to spend on my car now. my car is a 98 z28 m6. all i have done is slp loudmouth, FRA, k&n, and thats is.. what should i go for next?? and please tell me brand, sites to retreive it from and anything else i will need to know. thanx so much guys, without you guys i would have blown it up a long time ago.. lol :hail:

Z28_Ninja 09-22-2005 09:50 PM

cutout, lid, 160 t-stat, lca, sfc, underdrive pully, tune, and that is only like 1000 or so depending on brand and install but that is a start.

i already saw those and i didnt want to know all the mods, but people opinions on what THEY would do if they had the money. im not asking for every mod, just what they would do with $1K!!!

Humvee z28 09-22-2005 10:42 PM

well what do u want? tell us what it is u want out of ur car and we can help

jrp 09-22-2005 10:43 PM

and what other people would do with the money is irrelavant too your car; not everyone has the same goals and directions.

wills'-z28 09-22-2005 10:59 PM

That one i didnt see, it helps but i still want to know what others would do. i want more hp. the suspension i am happy with. but i want more power..

2K2WS6TA 09-22-2005 11:09 PM

Since you're in SoCal, LT headers are out, so are most other things too, how about some giggle gas (AKA Nitrous) easily cocealable, and when not in use has no effect on emmisions, and 100 hp at the push of a button :D

wills'-z28 09-22-2005 11:13 PM

nitro is the only thing that i really wanted to stay away from. this is my daily driver and dont trust the rest of the car (and myself) with nitro!! what about some heads, or a fast manifold? would you guys go with those or no.. i want to keep it at 1k so i cant do both. :bang:

jaberwaki 09-23-2005 02:30 AM

cam and headers....

black00TA 09-23-2005 02:41 AM

there are thousands of these, "what would u do with $1000" threads.
im going to sum it up for you.

lid, ls6 intake, SFC, LCA, good clutch, ported tb, LT's(if u can deal with emmisions), DR's.

everyone has there own variation to this formula, but thats the jist of it.

JustAnIlluzion 09-23-2005 02:49 AM

nitrous would be the best bang for your buck

kyles2000z 09-23-2005 11:04 AM

1. lid w/ free ram air (fra is basically same as the kit from SLP, just cut the lower airbox. forget about buying a smooth below, just use the 3 inch ferno stuff from home depot). $100
2. either a cutout or just cut the muffler off w/ a nice set of tips. $50-$150
3. ls6 intake. $300
4. lowering springs, adj. panhard bar (recenters rearend), LCA brackets (makes up for lost LCA angle after its lowered), boxed or tubular LCA's. $400
5. !CAGS skip shift elimniator. $30 from SLP or make your own for $.50
6. TNA shortstick. $50 on ebay.

this will put you around $1000. This will only get you to about 340 HP, but youll have a good foundation in the suspension for more power later, and youll benefit from all that down the road more than you will at first. also it'll be alot easier and mroe enjoyable to drive w/ a short stick and w/o the annoying CAGS that locks up 2nd gear and sends you to 4th. hope i was a lil help to ya.

Nittany_marine 09-23-2005 11:12 AM

Lid, headers, exhaust, cam. If you shop around correctly, you can do all these for 2 grand or less.

wills'-z28 09-23-2005 11:54 AM

do you guys think that underdrive pulleys are worth it?? it sayg 15hp and 3-2 mpg!! bs or not??

black00TA 09-23-2005 01:31 PM

i would stay clear until you have upwards of 380rwhp

:werd: i agree. don't worry about cags cuz as long as you accelerate fast enough you won't need to worry about it.

Lt1FBoDy209 09-23-2005 04:51 PM

headers and cam would be sweet but im in california :( gotta keep it legal(ish) till summer
you guys are mentioning ONLY 350ish hp lol i am coming from an A4 LT1 w/ like 290hp so im content with 340hp for the time being
i think im gunna hold off on the rims till december but i will be driving mountain roads and puny stock tires suck and i dont wanna lose traction all the time
i think a cutout will be the best road to take for now since it will cost like 80 bucks installed, free ram air and home depot !cags will work nicley also
i want to get a shifter (5.0 or hurst w/e i can get for cheaper) and a short throw which should be like 200 total.
lid for 100 and all the suspension stuff mentioned by kyles2000z and proboly an ls6 intake unless i can get a deal on some used z06 rims or something

thanks so much for all the advice guys
