Theres a 1999 Trans Am at a dealer with 149,000 km's, which is around 92,500 miles. Is that considered high? The car is mint inside and out. I have yet to test drive it because i just took a quick look at it on my home from work, since the dealer is about 10 minutes away from me. The dealer is asking $11,900 CDN, which is about $10,000 US. That seems a bit pricey. I would really like to test drive it and take a look under the hood, but since i haven't yet, i was looking for some thoughts on this subject. Thanks guys. Heres a link of the car.

Its a bit high, but not the highest Ive heard. Im fairly sure there's a few on the board that're over 130,000 miles. Ive got nearly 106k on mine and its a 99. Take it for a testdrive and see how its acting. If it feels trouble free, then go for it.

I have always been under the impression that anything more than an average of 15,000 miles per year is high mileage. 8 years x 15,000 miles = 120,000 miles, that should be the average number of miles on an eight year old car. Since the car you are looking at has 27,500 miles less than that I would not consider it a high mileage car and you should definitely get it if everything feels right about it. If something doesnt sit right walk away.

He said 149,000 Km, not miles. Haha, But serious...If that was true then a 20 year old car should have 300,000 miles. Not over the 15,000 miles a year, but I don't know if I would call that low mileage. Tim.

Don't look at the miles, drive the car, if you like it and your happy with it, get the thing!

Well that is exactly the Kelley blue book value, at least in my area, dunno what they're going for up there.

Generally for cars with upwards of 100k, i think it's a great idea, dependent on the price, to pull the engine and do a complete overhall. For $10k however, that may not be worth it, sounds like the car has been pretty well taken care of. I'd try to get $8k, or whatever that is to scale in canadian.

Had you read the original post you would have seen that he said the car had 149,000km which he said was about 92,500 miles. Which is 27,500 miles less than the 120,000 mile number I first came up with.

The 15,000 miles/year is just a general rule of thumb or guideline for judging late model cars. Obviously a 20 year old car with 300k miles is not a low mileage car, but a 4 year old car with 80,000 miles is going to have more miles than the average 4 year old car.

hey, my 01 has 90,000 miles on it and it still runs great. I've never ran it in the track and it's pretty much stock, so the car has treated me good. I say get in it, drive it and inspect it real good...and I mean real good. If you really want it that bad then go with how the car performs rather then the mileage.

Exactly, my friend bought a 00 Trans Am, had 80K miles but every thing was perfect, interior was flawless, car drove awesome, suspension was great, body was in clean shape, car was really nice and well kept. I had another friend with a 00 Trans Am WS6, car was whored, he didnt take care of it and it showed that car only had like 50K miles at the time but it wasnt nice at all. So it just depends, with miles your going to get wear and tear stuff.

I was able to pick up a 98 Z28 M6 in mint condition for $12K CAD and 74000kms last Sept. Garage stored for winters and completely stock. I'm pretty sure with almost double the mileage minus the 1 year difference in age is worth knocking down the price on that car a bit.

I paid $10,500 (bad credit) for my 99TA 108,000 miles. high miles....but great body, inside. car runs strong. im at 120,00mi now. only thing to go wrong was a window motor.

I just picked up an a4 98 camaro with 85k miles for $9000, in perfect shape except for bad paint on one side mirror (i'm guessing someone messed it up and did a crappy repaint job). If i'd had all cash and not a trade in, they would have gone down to 8000.

So yeah, IF it looks good, has no visible problems, and you like the way it drives, I'd say talk 'em down a thousand or so. What I noticed when i was looking at prices is that I could save 2 or 3 thousand dollars if I was willing to drive a couple hundred miles (which I was!). Helped alot in bargaining too.

As for the mileage, just check the typical wear items (electronics, motors (esp. window and seats), leaks in t-tops, etc). Look for good oil pressure on start up and after its warmed up. Double check the fluids before its ever started to see if the **** is brown and dirty. And listen for any piston slap at start up. Common or not, it can still be used to talk down the price (esp. if the dealership doesn't specialize in those cars).

Figure out what kind of maintanence records it has, and don't believe ANYTHING they say about maintainence, owners, or anything else they can think of if its not documented.

If you like the car, fight till you get the price you like. You just gotta be willing to walk if they won't deal with you.

$10,000 is not a bad price for that car. Is it a WS6? If so, and everything seems sound then DO IT! I just got my 99 TA WS6 for $11,300 and it had 58,000 miles on it. It was 800 miles away but nearly mint so I just had to...

mine had 116k when i bought it, was marked at 12k, talked him down to 8500k at 135k now.

Another thing to remember is that this season is the hardest for dealerships to sell performance cars.

A friend of mine was looking at car ads yesterday, and I happened to notice an 00 Mustang GT with 92k advertised here in Portland. In this city, most cars, especially the 99+ Mustangs, don't sit around for more than a few weeks. But this car's been advertised since early November (when i was car shopping). And they've dropped the price 3k down to $7000!! Blue Book is like 11k. All optioned out, red exterior, and no one wants it.

Like I said, its a hard time to sell these kinds of cars. They know it, so make sure you get that price down.
