Default Is it worth paying more for the SS then the z28?

Ive been lookin at some camaros and i see alot SS for like 2k or 3k more then a z28. Since i plan to mod it, would just going for a z28 and using the 2 or 3k the way i want it to be used be smarter?

Whatever way you choose is the best way to go. I was in the same situation, ended up buying the z28 6spd over the ss 6spd and I couldnt be happier with my choice.

I bought the SS because it looked better in my opinion but from a performance stand point they are pretty much the same car.

It really depends, on 2 questions, 1. How important is it to you to have an authentic SS, some people its the world, others could care less. 2. If you were to buy the SS would you be changing the wheels? Those are the 2 largest factors IMO for it, keeping in mind I'm not thinking about a fully SLP optioned SS, with the Auburn rear, 1LE or anything like that, if its 2k more for fully SLP optioned SS then I'd go for it. The thing with the car being authentic, if its a big deal to you I doubt you'd be asking if you should buy a Z or not, but it maybe, say you bought the Z28, it would never be a true SS even if you added every single mod that an SS has, some people thats an issue, with me it isn't, it'd be cool to have one, but it doesnt have to be authentic. The wheels thing is the next biggest thing, if you get the SS and plan on changing the wheels, and you dont care about the authenticity of the car it would be best to get the Z and get a hood and spoiler and save yourself some money. But if you do not plan on changing them then from a $$ stand point it'd be best to go with the SS since I'd imagine you'd be changing the wheels on the Z. Get my point?

True the ss looks better, Maybe I forgot to add that my z28 I bought already came with a different hood, came with the ultra z hood I happen to like it.

I was looking for a WS6 but found an SS at a great price so i moved on it. IMO z28 LS1s are ugly as sin. The SS package makes the car. Just my opionion though... You will also hold a better reslae value having a true SS.

If you prefer the look of the SS then YES it's worth the money if you are willing to spend it. But at the end of the day ALL LS1 Fbody's are pretty similar performance wise.

I'm no fan of the wheels on a SS but I'd change them anyway regardless. I do like the spoiler and the bonnet/hood.

However you can buy them aftermarket, so if you can get a z/28 for similar money that's always an option, although personally I would keep the z/28 badging. In fact if I repaint my car I'll probably fit a SS spoiler but I'd probably leave the bonnet alone.

when i was ordering my z i decided to save the $2500 and put it towards mods. whoever thinks the z is an ugly car is apparently brain dead. the clean lines on the z is the key.
but, to all their own.

if you like the appearance of an SS, and crave the 'name', than buy it. you can always slap the hatch and hood on later if you pick up the z28. that extra $2-3k will go a long ways towards bolt-ons.

Depending on your age there might be another thing to think about besides how the car looks. Some insurance companies charge a fairly large premium to have an SS or WS6 as opposed to the non-ram air models. That might not be true if you're older as insurance companies tend not to care as much.

i'd say save the money. even with the extra two grand or so, you can pick up a SS hood, and the spoiler for about 600 bucks or so. maybe less if you get them used. with paint, depending on what you're application is going to be, may run you about 1200. with the rest, you could do some decent bolt ons.. exhaust, etc... i'd say go with the Z. the only damn difference i can see, is a hood, and a spoiler. IMO not worth the extra 2-3k for the car. plus if you have it financed, thats more in intrest you're paying too.

I was in the same position, wanting an SS and seeing lots of Z28's go for much cheaper. I agree the SS looks better, no question about that. I ended up buying a Z for about 3K less than some of teh SS's I was looking at. I replaced the wheels on the Z. I'm extremely happy with it.

honestly I bought a z28 and I'm proud to have a z28.

if I bought an SS, I'd be proud to have an ss... formula... ws6 etc...

What I bought is what I bought. It's because I wanted it.

If you buy a z28, be proud about it. If you want a ss then get a ss, don't go about changing badges to ss, hood spoiler etc. because you want to MAKE an ss.

I had my heart set on a SS for the longest time but the right deal at the right time came along with the Z28 and I jumped on it. The only real difference is the hood and spolier. IMO the hood is badass and I might throw it on the z28, but who knows. I found the SS to be too much of a premium for what it was.

actually the SS and WS6 got different exhuast if you got the full SLP optioned cars and different suspension, so it's not just appearance like most think, similar to a cobra and a GT mustang they look pretty close to the same but looks can be decieving. so if you find a fully optioined SLP SS or WS6 or FIREHAWK in 01-02 with the 345 hp package guess what???? its faster than a Z28, Trans Am and Formula Firebird. so like i said it's not just appearance.

Not really, the only real help SLP gave those cars for power were the Blackwing Lid, and the Catback, for a stock catback it does flow pretty well, for a stock cat back, for a stock catback, but the standard catback isnt to bad either. Did you know that the fastest out of all the F-bodies bone stock was a 1998 stripper Z28, from 98-02 (base model LS1's all the way to Hawk', WS6, SS) it ran the fastest. (Excluding ZL1's, Blackbirds, Sevan Series etc.)
