Hey I was recently turned to an LS1 by a friend and was planning on buying one pretty soon. I have heard that the manuals arent that great and will go through clutches quick and easily. Just checking with all you guys on that one. Also the diffrences between the years, was wondering which would be the best year for me. For right now I only plan on doing bolt ons and gears and if it does end up being auto a torque converter. So With that what would you guys say is the best year for me and why. Such as because the head and intake manifold difference is better or what not. I do prefer a trans am but I could setlle for a camaro is there was a better deal for one so yeah, any help would be greatly apreciated. Thank you very much.

00 and above if your not going to build a race car. if its all out then buy a 98 6 cyl and gut it

Well as of right now I dont want too much I want to look at mid to low 12's so thats pretty easy Ive heard. And that will probably be it for a while. But it wouldnt be a racecar for at least about 5-10 years so yeah. Thanks for the reply

The manuals only go through clutches fast if you don't know how to drive, race a lot and have to ride the clutch off the line to keep from spinning, or make more power than the clutch can handle. I love the T56 in my car & wouldn't ever think of going with an A4.

Just looked at the sticky and read through it a little bit. What I got is I probably want an 01-02 because the better cam and no EGR. And it got the z06 clutch. How much power does that handle safely. And I know how to drive fine and I dont think I will be pushing the power limit, but what about the riding the clutch off the line. How long will it last under those conditions? And correct me if im wrong but cant you just attempt to grab traction with throttle control?

lol, the 01/02 dont have a "better cam" per say, lack of EGR is nominal, they do come with the LS6 intake though. You should be fine with the stock clutch unless you plan on seeing some pretty good numbers.

I wanna start out at low 12's that should be enough for the time being maybe break 11's but not any furth than that for a while. Thanks for the replies

A lot of the 98-00 owners will tell you there is little difference. A lot of the 01-02 guys will say there is. I see both sides but have an 02.

The 98-99 had a more aggressive cam from what I've read but has the LS1 intake and EGR. Not sure about the clutch. I know the 01 and 02 had no EGR, a milder cam, but has the LS6 intake and from what I understand the Z06 clutch and slightly better exhaust manifold design.

For getting low 12's high 11's you're going to be mod'ing anyway so I'm not sure it matters much. I would rather have the LS6 intake and no EGR but they are easy enough to swap/remove on an earlier model. If you race the weakest link is going to be the rear IMHO and all years came with the same crap 10 bolt. The 6 speed is certainly more of a "rear killer" than the A4 in my opinion. I also think that while the M6 is more fun to drive (to me at least) you'll probably get more consistant times on the strip with an A4. So I guess just look for the best deal and mod away.

Ideally look for an 01 or 02 with little or no mods and low mileage.

Well my friend is selling his for 15k its a 1998 purpleish blue z28 auto. It is a stock motor no spray or anything and runs very well. Has about 67k miles on it and already runs what I want to run so only thing I would do is put in some 3:73 gears. So you guys think thats a good deal

What mods were done cause I don't know of anyone running low 12's on a totally stock motor without juice or some type of forced induction. Our cars will run low 13's or maybe high 12's if they hook stock. It must be some kind of factory freak if it is. My guess is some mods were done. He have the stock rear too?

Oh and 15k is high for a stok 1998 with 67k IMHO. You could probably find an 02 with less or similar miles for 15k

Yea, 15k is way to high for a 98. This is going to sound totally biased, but if all your looking for is low 12's on a budget, do a cam only, full bolt on, stalled auto, that way your chances of breaking the rear are very low, and that saves you 2k right there, you'll get your mid to low 12's, and also have consistency, but.... you will sacrafice a few MPG.

agreed no way that car runs those numbers unless its a freak of nature fat chance and I got my 01 Z28 M6 for 15k with 27k
