Default Making sure a 99 camaro is a 99 ???

Okay, so, I want a 99+ to play with the computer and tune it. I am looking at a 99 camaro, but, how do I make sure that it isnt some leftover inbred reject from 98 and has the computer setup I need that is 99+ compatible? I already got a block that was a 99 but seems to be a carryover from 97 and a 98 camaro that I didnt know could not be programed like a 99+. I am sick of getting the wrong ****!!

If the motor is stock, the fastest way to check is look at the valve covers. If they are center bolt style it's a 99+. The 97-98 have perimeter bolt covers. Obviously you can check the VIN & build dates & such as well.

no no no no no, thats not what I am saying. Just because the year on the door jamb says 99, it does not always mean a 99. Take the 99 year engine I bought. its a early 99 engine and not worth **** and I cant do anything with it. Wasnt 99 engine's supposed to be better? SURPRISE!! mid year ****** change over!! Now, if I buy a 99 car, how do I know what month and or when iy has actual 99 **** on it? Motor I can look at the back of the block, electronics I can not. How can I tell if it is a full on 99 car and not some mid year bargain abortion???

a 99 is a 99 is a 99. GM did not put the same computers in the 99 they did in a 98.

What makes the 99 LS1 supposedly better than the 98 LS1 besides the PCM? Its the same engine, different computer. Theres a few small differences I think but nothing that makes the 99 superior.

True, but, the computer is limited in its tuning ability compared to the 99+ camaros.

Yes, esp at idle. The 98's you can use a hypertech for, the 99+ you need LS1Edit. If you have a 99, then you have a 99 computer. they did not switch it over mid year. Every 98 is the same, every 99 is the same. The year of the block has nothing to do with it. It's the harness and ecm.

I understand where you're coming from in the PCM perspective, but Im not undersatanding your difficulty. You want a 99+ so get a 99+. It would be a fluke if you bought a 99+ LS1 that was equipped with a 98 PCM.

Oooooooh, you wouldnt say that if you saw my luck. Like I also mentioned above, thought left was left and just bought, but, got whacked twice. I just want to make for damn sure it does not happen again. I already have a 3300lb $5k red door stop in my driveway, dont need another one.

Maybe I should just go with a 2k just to make sure, lol.....

Well, now, an update. Seems to have it that this 99 I am looking at is a 98 body with a 99 computer in it! 10/98 door sticker and what appears to be a 09354896 PCM. Just as *** backward as we have been talking about. It looks like what I need, but........

go with a 2k and up man, you sound like your having problems....

Get a clue? What the hell do I look like, Mr. GM goodwrench with build sheet specs in my back pocket so I can take a look at to confirm, or check crossover dates? Just shows how fucked up americans are (yes, I am an American), mid model year change over ****, wtf? Like it was stated, 99 "should" be 98, etc, that why we have......ready for this......NEW YEARS DAY!!!! I made a mistake once and do not wish to repeat it. If you have money to **** away on a chance about something you dont know, I am all happy for you, you do it, not me. The whole ****** point of this thread is I DONT have a clue. I came here asking for advice from those that DO have a clue. If you want to help, give me the clues I need. If not, keep a trolling on some other thread.

I tried to give you a clue and you quoted me and said I was wrong. 10/98 build is a 99 model year, therefore, came with a 99 engine and ECM. You typed at me with guns dripping with sarcasm, when I was giving you the correct information. If you DON'T KNOW WTF YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T TRY TO CORRECT PEOPLE! You think GM employee's go home for christmas and come back to work January 2nd working on new cars? How the hell do you think GM is going to supply a full year of cars by the time spring hits? Ooohhh.. maybe they start working on it after all the PREVIOUS models have been shipped??
