What should my first mod be?

I'm looking to spend under $100 so I'm thinking to get either a Transgo SK or a SLP lid (with a K&N filter). This is for the TA in my sig.

I see. I have been leaning towards getting a Transgo SK since I had my V6 Bird (over a year ago). Suppose I'll pick one of them up and get the lid/filter as my next mod.

shift kit?!...first mod?...hmm, go with a lid, 50-60 bucks on ebay.....

WS6 Rampage 12-09-2006 04:37 PM

Dude,......Id say buy a lid but they're typically a tad over a $100 now.

If anything,.....spend that cash on some materials and port and polish your TB, debaffel your hood(cold air) and fashion yourself a "funnel/channel to your airbox, cut the center section in your air-box, cut the EGR(yours is a 98 so yours is behind the TB blocking incoming air) replace the PCV valve and if you really have balls,....descreen the MAF.

Get the smooth bellows.:judge:

Well, I've been checking the FS forum and saw a few lids go for $55. The SK seems to go for about 70-80.

STRETCH'S T/A 12-09-2006 04:45 PM

definitely get a lid first, check the parts for sale section, some really good deals in there.

SladeX 12-09-2006 04:51 PM

lid should always be on the short list for first mods.

Silas2k 12-09-2006 06:44 PM

from the stick up top:

Lid:
A lid replaces your stock lid, which was designed with comfort, not power, in mind. Simply put, an aftermarket lid does not have the restrictive air silencing fins and baffle found on the stocker. It allows more air in, and is a "must do first or second" mod. A lid is a lid, don't ask which one is best.

Well, it seems the SLP lids are the most common, and seem to be liked by everyone. Also, these lids work on stock TA hoods right? And '98 lids differ from 00-02 lids? Thanks for the information, guys.

SLP is ok. I like Whisper better becasue they have a rubber seal between the MAF and the lid.

K&N is not worth anything, IMO. I use paper filters (FRAM or AC Delco).

The lid will fit with any stock hood.

The '98-'99 lids don't require a breather filter for the AIR pump because it doesn't connect to the lid like the '00+ cars do.

Oh and,

GET THE LID FIRST, NO QUESTION :judge:

BriancWS6 12-09-2006 08:01 PM

My vote is for a lid.

I have had a Granatelli (sold it cause the fit and finish SUCKED) and an SLP, which I LOVE (fit and finish is better than any other lid I have seen. Then my buddy has a Whisper lid and that thing fits like total ASS! He was so pissed as we tried to get it to fit. The finish is also very rough and the color isn't a good match with the rest of the under hood components.

JayplaySS 12-09-2006 08:48 PM

dj2005 12-09-2006 08:58 PM

Horsepower in a bottle is for sissies. j/k....kinda

+1 on the lid. I have a whisper and like it. Do the FRA (free ram air) when you do the lid. It is worth a little, atleast at high speeds.

Blazingz28 12-09-2006 09:42 PM

With the SK you will probably want a tranny cooler to keep her alive!

sportinss 12-09-2006 09:57 PM

Get the "Driver Mod" first, its free. Make sure you can drive the thing befor you start putting power adders. :poke:

Lol j/k I have the MTI clear lid, looks grat with a K&N under it.I have a shift kit as well, but I still say go with the lid first.
