It has to be reset, look in your owners manual.

turn your ingnition to the accessory position, and pump the gas or brake- can't remember three times and the oil light will flash at you and then turn off. It won't come back on till you have around 3,000 more miles on the car. Mine hasn't come back on for over 4500 miles.

That light is really annoying though.

Turn ignition switch to RUN, don't start car - depress the gas pedal to the floor 3 times - that way it won't reset the trip odometer.

the oil change light can not be permanately disabled, and it isn't preset to turn back on at a certain mileage, the computer looks at how the car has been driven, and there is a sensor in the oil pan that monitors the oil in some fashion that it will turn the light on. I've had it come on after about 1500 miles before(runnin the car pretty hard at some tracks) and also had it turn on after about 3500 miles with regular day to day driving.

The GM oil life system is based on engine revolutions and engine operating temperature only - can come on anywhere from 3-10K depending on how you drive the car. Mine has only come on a couple times since I bought the car new in '01 - always wondered if retuning/resetting the PCM resets the oil life system too?

Just to clarify, the light dosent come on at an exact amount of miles every time u reset it, it comes on when the computer says u need an oil change due too the condition of the oil.

the pcm takes alot of diffrent factors in deciding when to flash the oil change light temp amount of time spent at wot, rpm patterns, mileage, and few other things aswell. the average is between 2500 and 5000 mile depending on your driving habits. its a neat system for the average car owner that dont maintence there car regulaly. but for the ones of us that treat our cars like a member of the family it can be annoying

Do you know if resetting the PCM/retuning automatically resets the oil life system?
