Default Spec Clutches?

I have a 2001 WS6, engine has about 490 RWhp and needs a clutch immediately. Was going to buy a spec 3. Wanting to know any good, bad experiences or opinons anybody had? Any recommendations to any other brand clutches appreciated? Budget 900$ w/aluminum flywheel!

I would get a shatterproof bellhousing, too many horror stories with those spec clutches.

I've had my Spec stage3 for 3+ years, with 500rwhp & 555 rwtq and had no problems.

i had a spec 3 on my ss and no problems other than chatter.

the majority of the complaints you hear are hearsay. "i know a guy who had a buddy who's girlfriend's grandma had a spec grenade on her"

somebody else will have to chime in on that. mine spent most of its time in the garage and i think in the 3 years that clutch was on the car i probably didn't put 2k miles on it.

I had chatter w/my 3+ but loved it. A couple hard launches after the break in period was done and it was fine.

Not alot of miles on it, my ride is not a dd, but I'd say somewhere between 3500 - 4500 miles, with several hard launches and alot of spirited driving.

i have a 3+ and i like it. i have a 2004 GTO with the LS1 and T-56. Spec gives you a shim to put in behind the slave. they say you need it. i've had it in twice (long story) and both times it slipped. the second time i had it milled down to half of its original thickness... it still slipped at WOT. i pulled it out again. it works perfect now with engagement right near the top.

I have had two different SPEC stage III's. The first one was years ago, and it was a PITA to break in, and even then it was like an on and off switch, which was great to race, but a pain when trying to drive it normally. I installed my new stage III last year, and it is a LOT better. This is due to the fact that SPEC has re-designed their clutches recently and they are much improved and a lot better in quality compared to thier older ones. After driving it on mile #1 after the new install it felt completly broken in, and once it was broken in, it was easier to drive than the stock clutch.

Anyway you drive it, at best I would expect 15-20,000 miles on an aftermarket clutch before expecting a new one.

I am running about 650 at the wheels and my stage III is still holding like a champ. You will not find another clutch out there that will handle the same amount of HP, for the $.

I have 450 Hp off spray with a spec 3+ and it is a great clutch with the billet flywheel. Do that with a new slave and adjustable master and youre good to go. I really like my 3+, once its broke in it drives really well.

I just went through 2 Spec 3 clutches with the same amount of power that you have in 6 months. I suggest a textralia. Everyone in this site recommends them.
