Default what is this used for? lol

cant really see this as being useful but idk.. its on my 2000 ws6, what does it do? i know that air is just in the lid until it is sucked into the engine, but why the big black box all around? is that just for my AIR system? can i remove it when i delete my AIR? and what would i replace it with?(to connect it to my MAF

I think the technical name for it is "air silencer". You can get an aftermarket lid and do away with it, and put a small filter on the end of the hose that connects to it.

Yup. The big box behind the air lid is a silencer. The tube on the side of it goes to the AIR system. Aftermarket lids for 2001-2002 f-bodies come with a small round filter to go on the end of the tube when the silencer is removed. Otherwise, you can buy a valve cover breather at an auto parts store to use there (open element kind, not the chrome cylinder ones).

Lets say I get an aftermarket lid, and do away with the silencer, is there gonna be a lot of noise? and the only tube that goes to that box goes to the AIR right? So if I deleted my AIR I wouldn't need the filter for the tube right?

Thanks again for the infor,
Michael

You probably wont notice the difference. Most people like the sound of the motor drawing air in. GM just loves to make their v8s quiet.

strap an slp lid on there, you will most likely not hear a difference in sound and it cleans up the engine bay very nicely

just buy a lid. it's like a 4 minute install, 100% bolt on with no extra parts needed and so simple a 3 year old could do it.

MAF connects right to the aftermarket lid. Everything bolts right into place and is a simple install, that is if your MAF comes out of the stock airbox easily . I spent like 5 minutes trying to get mine off before i realized that im proboly never going to put the stocker back on and just cut it.

bolts right up and cleans up the engine bay a lot. the performance gain is minimal but does exist.

The smooth air lid can be considered the base of modding, along w/ a catback exhaust. Once you do both, its hard to stop modding. The mods dont get easier to do either!!
