Default Whats the difference between ST's and LT's???

Is there a significant difference between short tube and long tube headers. Which is good for what. I heard LT's are better but why?

You'll want LT's unless you don't have the room. Also, LTs can sometimes scrape. Mine never have, but they can.

Basically, to over simplify things, the longer the tubes, pretty well the more power you make, I've read a number of times on here. There's more that goes into it, but that's good enough for me.

There's talk abut power in differnt RPM ranges, like shorties for low end, mids for power under curve, and LTs for peak numbers, but... I don't really go in for all that. Not sure the numbers justify talking about a significant difference.

They are not significantly bette than stock LS1 manifolds. They might make 5 rwhp or so more peak.

But, they look nice.

LT will balance the exhaust gas out better when exiting the head there for improving flow then if you step up to x-pipe then it will balance flow there also. st will cram the exaust gas all together as it exits the head or that is what i have been told

Most shorties are made to replace your OEM exhaust manifolds, and will provide a minimal gain. Some people use them to retain stock cats. It's actually not legal to move or modify stock cats, although most people do it anyway when they're looking for performance. The exhaust manifolds on the LS1s flow very well, and really would not benefit from shorties. Mid tubes are better, long tubes are best for power gains. The location of the collectors from the exhaust ports moves the RPM torque range.

Longtubes for power, plain and simple.

The only reason i would recommend someone to a set of shorties... actually i take that back---- i would only recommend mid-length headers to those that are, say, thinking about dual cutouts before the merge.

I have Pacesetter LT's going to a 3" ORY with dual cutouts. The cutouts cause quite a bit of clearance issues ONLY because they have to fit further down the pipe (further back toward the butt of the car). My roommate is on stock headers and CATS with his 2000 SS but is running dual ELECTRIC cutouts on a TSP 3". His cutouts don't even come close to the ground, they tuck up there better than anything i've seen. But that's only b/c he is still on stock manifolds. As soon as he puts on LT's, he's going to have to move the cutouts down to where his clearance will drop.

The short tubes aren't much better than stock manifolds to be honest. The only reason I would consider them is if I lived in California or such, but other than that, no way. The long tubes will put out way better power, and add a deeper note to your exhaust. Plus, if you plan on doing mods like a cam or nitrous down the road, you will definitely notice a HUGE gain because of long tubes.
