Is the SLP Cold Air system worth it?

Is this SLP Cold Air system (http://www.ls1speed.com/cont.cfm?cid=C0000011) worth it? Or does it really not do anything? Do most guys end up going with this? Or do they just do the lid, and leave it at that?

DirtyJohn 11-12-2007 03:56 PM

I wouldn't pay $120 for it.
I think thats one of those "if you want every last bit of HP" type of deals.
Pros and cons with those ram air/cold air kits too

IROC403 11-12-2007 04:59 PM

I love mine, I also only paid $50 for it used. if your gonna spend the money, get the fast toys one, it goes down lower. the ssra one works the best but some people say it can suck up water in the rain. its all preferance/ vs.$$$

CALL911 11-12-2007 05:54 PM

So whats the difference if I have Ram Air? (I do since its for my Formula WS6 in my sig)

Also, what kind of gains RWHP wise does this thing really do? 2-3? 5?

mbm88 11-12-2007 06:13 PM

I would save yourself the money, get a lid if you don't already have one, make yourself some smoothe bellows at Home Depot, and get an SLP Mass Air or Granatelli.
Good luck.

I got this one for my Z:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...000026-5793749

All I had before that was the stock un-modified air box with a K&N Filter. I feel like the car breathes better and the response is a little quicker.

I have no dyno results, but look at it. If nothing else, it looks awesome and the engine has GOT to be breathing better.

6THZ28 11-12-2007 06:40 PM

^^^^^ it definitely looks better but though it's sucking in MORE air, it's sucking in warm/hot air as compared to a FTRA or even the free air box mod

ULTIMATEORANGESS 11-12-2007 06:46 PM

i have it. at higher speeds it helps bring in more air.

cryptnosis 11-12-2007 07:18 PM

i HAD it. . .. I dont recommend it. Especially if you ever change engines, i have the LQ9 block. CONS to it, your IAT will sky rocket and if you do any kind of tuning, will horribly mess it up. I just bought the volant version, looks like it will shield most the heat coming off the engine.

T-56SLPSS 11-12-2007 07:44 PM

I wouldn't spend the money on it and just do the free air box mod. The air box mod does the same thing for free.

SStingray 11-12-2007 08:15 PM

Mine was a Christmas gift so it was definitely worth the $0.00 I paid. Seriously, it has to help. It should have another section to put it in the direct path of the 100+ mph airstream though IMO.

ghardester 11-12-2007 08:52 PM

I had one on the previous Bird, which was a '01 V-6. When I was crusing at highway speed and tromped on it to pass I thought I could feel the difference. But in order to make it work there is a 1 inch piece of rubber that blocks off the normal air box opening. So you wouldn't put it on a car with the taller Ram Air air box. If I had a 'sleek beak' regular V-8 TA I don't think I would do it again. I would change the air box, lid to something else.

Don't mess with your stock MAF. It can handle up to 500 HP and alot of guys who have changed them out actually lost power. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

CALL911 11-13-2007 06:20 AM

I have heard the same about the aftermarket MAF's. So, back to my last question, how much extra power is this Cold Air system really going to give me? If it just "looks cool", or the gains can be gained by doing a free mod I am not aware of, I probably will not get it. However if the gains will give you extra power (more than 2-3 HP) than I will probably go for it. Does anyone have any info on this? Power gains? Track differences?

T-56SLPSS 11-13-2007 10:20 AM

SLP claims for it to add 10-15hp if i remember right. All you are doing is making the cold air hit ur air dam and with the CAI it makes a chamber for air to flow up under your air box. The air dam does all the work, forcing air up into your motor compartment. With the air box mod all you have to do is cut out the bottom of your air box so that when your driving the faster you go the more air that is forced up with your air damn into the bottom of your air box. It creates a 2nd ram air if you will. The CAI just makes the air that comes up travel threw the box to keep it cooler but im not sure its a 120 difference from just doing the free air box mod.

I Just Would Like To Add Something That I Found Out With My Older Camaro, After I Spent A Fortune With Slp ( Which There Customer Service Is Enough To Make Me Not Go Back)...

You Know How Slp Always Seems To Promise Alittle Too Much Horsepower Gains With There Products? I Dont Know If You Noticed There Usual "up To 35 Horsepower" Claims.

Well I Read Up On Them Once And In Fine Print It Said That The Horsepower Ratings Are From Testing It On A Car With (heads/cam, Manifold, Full Exhuast Etc)..i Couldnt Beleive What I Read, I Was Super Pissed Off.

THIS IS WHY THE HORSEPOWER SEEMS OUT OF WHACK.

Go To Home Depot And Get The "felpro" Bellows, They Are In The Sewer Or Plumbing Isle, Its Like 5 Inches Long And 3.5 Inches Wide, You Can Boil It For Like 3 Minutes ( If That) And Then It Will Be Easier To Slip On, Or You Can Just Play With It Till It Slips On. I Think I Paid $7.00 For Mine, Compared To 50+ Dollars.
