mechanical gauges do not need 12 volt power and are run through mechanical interface between the sender and the unit...electrical gauges use power to convert between a sending unit and reciever. i prefer electrical...it is more of a preference for most ppl

isnt mech when the fluid has to come right up to the guage? For ex, a oil temp guage would havea oil line comin from the engine, through the dash, right up to the guage,,,so oil right into the guage>? I could be way off (i went elec) but i think thats how it works,,,,someone will put me in my place if im wrong.

here's how mine turned out.

That's correct, mechanical gauges bring the fluid straight to the gauge. I personally prefer electrical gauges to avoid hot oil/water or pressurized fuel from being run in the passenger compartment. Some will argue that mechanical gauges are more accurate though.

I prefer electrical only because I had mechanical in one of my third gens back in the day and the oil pressure line ended up breaking and leaking oil all over my floor

that happened to me except with my water temp....bah...electrical could be considered "less reliable" but i hell, if they break atleast i won't have **** all over my floor again...electrical to me, is a lot easier to hook up as well
