A4 Gear selector: Does yours suck?
Because mine certainly does. theres at least 1 second of lag before it shifts and for some reason 2nd-3rd takes around 3 seconds, so if I want to race with it I have to time it where it doesnt bounce off the rev limiter. Is this lag normal?

Get the car tuned by someone...they can adjust shift points and line pressure for a better and more firm shift. Manually shifting is pointless. What I do is if I'm wanting to go from a roll, I'll go ahead and knock it back into the gear I want to start in and then when I go I put it in D (not overdrive D however). I was told that D uses more bands than the overdrive.
But it's best if you can find that sweet spot where you flash the converter...personally my car on stock gears likes a 30 and 60 punch.

Yeah I find if I punch it from around 30 mph it will drop down to first and scratch real good
But it seems like its already been tuned as it shifts harder than other A4 TA's I've been in, its pretty hard to figure out with 5 previous owners. For some reason turning off the TCS makes it less jerky

4L60E shifting is controlled by the PCM not the gear selector. Moving the gear selector only "allows" the car to shift to that gear, the PCM still has to "command" the shift. As stated above the only way to adjust the shift points on a 4L60E is tuning.

if tuned properly for good shift points the car will be faster in drive anyway, lower gears should engage extra bands for engine braking that add to drivetrain power loss
on slower cars (high 13-15sec 1/4) it can be as much as a .1-.2 in the 1/4 between manually shifting a tranny or replacing the governor with one that has the desired shift points

If you're roll racing tell the other person that you have to punch it on the 2nd honk to their third if they are a M6. I know of the lags you talk about.
The first thing us A4 guys should do is get a stall, shift kit, tranny cooler and a tune. You would be suprised by the performance you get out of those four simple things

and as far as shift kit, avoid junk
for 700r4/4l60 type trannies the Transgo kits are about the best on the market, they fix factory weaknesses instead of just upping line presure in ways that are more harmful such as the B&M kits
don't go overboard with it either, you don't need to lay a foot of rubber at every 1-2 shift
