Do you have to respect the "IN" and "OUT" of a solenoid, or can they be inverted?

Do you have to respect the "IN" and "OUT" of a solenoid, or can they be inverted? My question is: can the nitrous from the bottle enter the nitrous solenoid where it says "OUT" and exit where it says "IN"? Or do you have to respect the order? I have a HSW kit.

Well lets back up a minute...
Which solenoid do you have from HSW? Is it the small one with side in and side out? Or is it the bigger one with side in, bottom out and a purge port?
If it is a side in and side out just loosen the nut on top of the can and turn the base around to the posistion you want.
If its a side in bottom exit and you are wanting to feed in the bottom and exit the side you can not do that..
