"Brown" coloration to TR6's on 175 shot... Car is running great, strong, etc...I have ATAP1 and EFI LIve Pro, however only autotap is working now, cable issue with efi live... ran 175 shot and data logged, couldnt see KR on basic autotap so I dont know about this, but 02 were 400-900 and dipped to 200 for a split second... everything felt fine. pulled a plug today to check it, and it looks like rust all over the plug (tip, ceramic, everything). Don't know exactly what this type of coloration means, but obviously something not right. On a 150 shot and 3 degrees out, plugs looked fine (pump gas)... Now on 175 shot and 2 degrees out with Torco accelerator (about 105 ocatane unleaded total), the plugs are discolored... Car: 2000 Camaro, 382 stroker, 11:1 CR, X1 cam, stg 2 heads, auto, NX GM MAF kit jetted for 175, TOrco additive with Sunoco 94 octane, TR6 gapped at .038. I am planning on going with TR-8's gapped at .030-.035 and using a 200 shot with 4-6 degrees timing out. BUT obviousl need to figure this one out. If possible, I will have Greg Banish take a look at it on the dyno since he tuned the car NA. Any ideas about the rust colored brown coloring, looks like it is actually a "deposit" and not just color...like actual rust was poweder coated on it! Before, with the 150 shot, the plugs looked very clean, almost like it was too hot of a plug though (kind of white-ish)... Thanks, SDB |

Mine look the same way and never really figure it out (also running Sunoco 94). I'm running no fuel additives but I see that you are. What exacly is Torco additive. Many people that use octane boosters and other additives will start to develop a redish brown dusting on the plugs that will eventually cause miss fires over an extended period. Not sure of a cure but maybe that helped out. :) |

It does sound like some kind of additive that either you or Sonco is adding to their gas. |

Forgot to metion SDB. I think Sunoco is adding a good amount of ethanol to their 93, 94 and 100 octane. My fuel solenoid plunger seal swelled up from their fuel in less than two months. You might want to check that out if your getting crazy O2 readings, that's what I was getting just before the noid finaly stuck shut. I swapped to a better seal and now the O2s are pretty solid and consistant through out a run. |

It's definatly some kind of Fuel additive. You aren't supposed to run additives every tank. Go at least one tank between adding additives. Most of the time stuff like 104+ turns the plugs a pinkish color. I keep going back to where you write about Torco Accelerator? |
The plugs probably have 1,000 miles on them (very hard miles)...The TOrco accelerator is supposed to be great stuff, unleaded, and I add a can to 1/2 tank of 94 Sunoco...could be overdoing it with the stuff. Only used two cans so far, and one bottle of the shitty NOS additive. I am changing out my plugs tomorrow to -8 NGK's... Thanks for the pic-hosting! I have seen people use the Torco additive with great success on nitrous and supercharged LS1's...sure is cheaper and easier than full unleaded race gas....it makes 10 gallons of 93 up to 104 octane, and 5 gallon to 107 octane, and 20 gallons to 97 octane, and supposedly has the properties not just the octane rating of their actual unleaded race gas. I can get the stuff for cheap locally, $92.30 for 10 cans including tax. Carry one with me, if I want to run a big shot, just add it, wait about 1/2 hour for it to mix and go racing. Of course the brown shit on the plugs isn't all theat great! SDB |
The insulator on my TR6 pugs were RED when I used 104+. Very odd. |
As long as your not picking up a miss fire I would say screw and keep using the Torco. I would be more concerned about my fuel noid using that than anything, esspecially if it has any nitromethane in it. If it does has the same properties as race gas you should be fine. On their site it says that it's not octane booster just super concentrated race gas yet your plugs look similar to other people's plugs that use regular octane boosters. We run Cam 2 race fuel in my dad's Vette and the plugs have never looked like that. :confused: |
Reddish/brown seems to be common with additives/cleaners in my experience from the last 25 years. |
I did run one bottle of the NOS brand octane booster, wonder if that is what caused the problem...I only run 94 sunoco gas and the Torco aditive now...I am switching plugs today, so I will drive it and run some nitrous through it and see what the plugs look like. Getting checked at Livernois Motorsports Tuesday for AF ratio, KR, etc...hope to use a 200 shot on pump gas with the TOrco and about 4 degrees timing out, SDB |
THAT IS DEFINITLY AN ADDITIVE COLOR, i WOULDNT WORRY ABOUT IT IF YOUR AIRFUEL AND KNOCK ARE GOOD. |
